AI HAS TAKEN OVER THE ORIGINAL TASTE OF PNG CONTEMPORARY MUSIC:
We must Protect the Originality of PNG Contemporary Music from AI Exploitation
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly changing the global music scene, but in Papua New Guinea, it is beginning to erode the originality and cultural identity of our contemporary music. What may sound modern or “improved” through AI technology is, in reality, killing the authentic sound and spirit of PNG’s legendary artists.
Today, we see people using AI to recreate or remix songs from the great icons of PNG music, the very artists who laid the foundation for our country’s musical identity. It may sound better than the original but This practice is wrong, unethical, and disrespectful. If you are truly passionate about music, use AI to create your own songs, write your own lyrics, record your own voice, and express your own creativity. Do not use AI to exploit someone else’s artistry.
RESPECT THE LEGACY OF PNG MUSIC LEGENDS:
Our legendary musicians: from the pioneers of contemporary music in the 1970s and 1980s to the modern artists of today, have dedicated their lives to their craft. They wrote their own lyrics, composed their own melodies, and performed from the heart to share stories that reflect PNG’s culture, struggles, and pride. These artists are the voice of our nation, and their work is part of our cultural heritage.
AI-generated covers and remixes that imitate their voices or melodies without permission are not tributes, they are acts of digital theft. Such practices strip artists of their ownership, their originality, and the income they rightfully deserve.
LEGAL & ETHICAL CONCERNS:
When digital platforms like YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok are fully monetized in PNG, creators who use AI to mimic or remix original songs will start earning money from content that is not theirs. This creates a serious ethical and legal problem. The revenue generated should belong to the original artists, not to those who repurpose their music using AI tools.
This situation calls for urgent attention from the Censorship Board, the National Cultural Commission, the Intellectual Property Office, and other relevant authorities. Clear guidelines and copyright protections must be established to prevent AI misuse in the PNG music industry.
CULTURAL IMPACT & THE NEED FOR ACTION:
Music in Papua New Guinea is more than entertainment, it is a reflection of our traditions, languages, and way of life. Each song carries a story that connects us to our roots. Allowing AI to distort or replicate these works without acknowledgment or respect endangers the authentic sound of PNG and the values our music stands for.
We must not let technology erase the unique identity of PNG’s musical heritage. Instead, AI should be used responsibly, as a creative tool that helps artists produce new, original work, not as a shortcut to fame or profit.
A CALL TO ALL MUSIC LOVERS & CREATORS.
We call on:
• Musicians to protect their work through proper copyright registration and awareness.
• Content creators to use AI ethically, for innovation, not imitation.
• Fans and the public to support genuine PNG artists who create with originality and cultural pride.
• Authorities to implement strong policies that safeguard PNG’s creative industry from AI exploitation.
Let’s stand together to protect the originality, creativity, and soul of Papua New Guinea’s contemporary music. Our artists deserve respect, recognition, and protection, not digital exploitation.
AI must never replace authenticity. Originality is our identity.
