For the first time, Tuvalu has a complete and internationally comparable picture of mortality.

This ‘Making Death Count’ analysis looks at causes of death over a one‑year period and shows how mortality patterns are changing, with chronic diseases now accounting for most recorded deaths.

The analysis was produced through Tuvalu’s participation in the Pacific Regional Cause‑of‑Death Coding Service, coordinated by SPC with support from Bloomberg Philanthropies’ Data for Health Initiative and World Bank Pacific, to strengthen the quality and consistency of cause‑of‑death data.

These findings highlight why reliable, standardised mortality data matter, helping move from assumptions to evidence that can inform prevention, health planning and policy decisions.

🌊💙 Today, we celebrate our greatest treasure: the ocean!

The Pacific Ocean connects us and forms the link between all the Pacific Island countries and territories (PICTs).

🎣 Every action counts:

✅ Practise sustainable fishing
✅ Conserve marine resources
✅ Value traditional knowledge
✅ Support coastal communities.

Conserving the ocean means ensuring sustainable fisheries for food security and future generations. 👥🐠

🌊 This World Oceans Day, we're embracing the theme Reimagine: reimagining how data and technology can help build a more resilient Pacific.

🛰️🌏 Through satellite technology and open-access digital tools, Digital Earth Pacific empowers Pacific communities to monitor coastlines, track environmental change, strengthen disaster preparedness, and build climate resilience.

As a free and open digital public infrastructure, Digital Eearth Pacific supports informed decision-making, sustainable development, and the vision of the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent.

🌊 As our ocean and coastlines continue to change, access to timely, reliable data has never been more important.

Grounded in thousands of years of environmental stewardship, Pacific peoples are not just on the frontline of climate change — they are leading the legal and political response to it.

🌏 Last month, 15 Pacific governments, civil society representatives, youth leaders and academics gathered in Fiji to discuss next steps in advancing climate justice at the Climate Justice and Sea Level Rise Week. Across the discussions, one message came through clearly and consistently: Pacific member states want to see the International Court of Justice Advisory Opinion operationalised in practical ways to advance climate justice for our region and our peoples.

Mālō e lelei 🇹🇴
Your Pacific Community(SPC) wrapped on an incredible week in the Ha’apai Islands.
Over the past few days, participants from the Tonga Water Board, Public Health, Climate Change, Environment, and Natural Resources teams came together to build practical skills in water quality monitoring.
From fieldwork to data collection, it was all about making sure communities have what they need to look after their water every day.
What stood out most was the commitment. People showing up, learning together, and thinking about how to take this work back to their communities to keep water safe now and into the future.
Our deepest gratitudes to the Governor of Ha’apai, Hon. Dr Pita Taufatofua, for opening and closing the training and for his continued support of this important work.
This important work is part of the Strengthening the Water Resilience of Pacific Outer Island Communities project, delivered by SPC with Tonga’s Ministry of Lands, Survey, Planning and Natural Resources, with support from New Zealand MFAT.
Vinaka to everyone who made this week what it was

🌊This World Oceans Day, we celebrate the Pacific peoples who have stewarded vast ocean spaces for generations.

Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZs) are more than lines on a map, they are living seascapes that support biodiversity 🐠, food security 🍽️, cultural heritage 🌺, and sustainable livelihoods 🛶.

As we reflect on this year's theme, Reimagine, we are called to rethink our relationship with the ocean: not as owners of its resources, but as guardians of its future.

Together, we can build a future where healthy oceans and thriving communities go hand in hand. 🌍

🐟🌊 As one Blue Continent, Pacific Island countries share the responsibility of stewarding our ocean resources, ensuring they continue to support our communities, cultures, and economies for generations to come. 🤝

The Pacific's impact reaches far beyond our shores. The Western and Central Pacific Ocean provides 50% of the world's tuna catch, helping feed millions of people worlwide and supporting livelihoods across the region.

This World Oceans Day, let's reimagine a future where cooperation, stewardship, and sustainability ensure the ocean continues to nourish both people and planet.

🏝🌊 Rising seas are already reshaping coastlines, ecosystems, and communities across the Pacific.

In Tuvalu 🇹🇻, sea levels have risen nearly twice as fast as the global average over the past three decades. Faced with an uncertain future, the country has become a symbol of both the urgency of climate action and the resilience of Pacific peoples.

💻 In 2022, Tuvalu even launched the world's first digital nation, preserving its culture, history, and identity in the virtual world.

This World Oceans Day, the theme Reimagine challenges us to rethink our relationship with the ocean and our responsibility to protect it.

🌍 The future is not yet written. It's time to act as one.

| In atoll island countries like Tokelau, water is not only essential for daily necessities but also plays a crucial role in infrastructure development. With limited access to underground water, communities rely on rainwater harvested from rooftops and stored in tanks.

This water supports basic needs and is vital for building large facilities such as schools and community centres, making effective water management a cornerstone of both everyday life and long-term progress.
