More success stories about regenerative agriculture in dry environments

🌍 World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought | 17 June

Desertification, fertile land slowly turning to desert, is often spoken about as a global crisis. But as Namibia is the driest country south of the Sahara, our farmers live it.

When the Lüsse family first arrived on Farm Pommernhagen in 1972, the veld was so degraded there was reportedly just one perennial grass tuft left on the land. Today, after years of regenerative, high-density grazing, that same veld is dominated by perennial grasses and the bush is thinning out naturally.

The proof came during the 2019/20 drought: Thorsten and Ursula Lüsse brought their core cattle and sheep herds through it without destocking, while improving their sustainable stocking rate from 20 to 30 kg/ha.

This shows, that with the right management, protecting the soil, keeping vegetative cover, working with the land’s natural cycles, degraded veld can be brought back to life.

Farm Pommernhagen is one of many Namibian Regenerative Agriculture success stories. You can read more on this story here: https://www.nau.com.na/farm-pommernhagen

Unfortunately, bush encroachment is not mentioned as a threat. A holistic approach to regeneration savannas would be more appropriate - getting optimal grass and tree production

Global climate maps wrongly mark Africa’s vast savannas as ‘degraded’ lands in need of trees. This forest-first thinking risks damaging some of the planet’s richest ecosystems. Latest research shows that true reforestation potential is far smaller than once imagined – and that protecting savannas may be as important as planting trees.
