He remembered his experiences as youth in Scouting. And wanted to bring the same joyful experiences to his kids at school.
So he started negotiating and kneading and pressurizing the Head Master and the School Board to allow him to start Scouting at his school. And he went to Scout HQ and got some help from our side. And he convinced his colleagues to join into the venture.
And in October 2022, it finally happened – we invested Gardener Academy as a new Group!

To Francis of Gardner, the Chief Scouts awards you a Certificate of Merit for your unwavering effort to get the group going and to keep it going, under numerous difficulties!

A young Troop Scouter noticed a positive aptitude in one of her PL’s: he always helped every other Scout to get things done. Never mind whether from his own Patrol or from other Patrols. So she decided on a Scout Name for the PL. We will tell you more about that Scout name later.
The PL proved his leadership ability during a very difficult hike in the Khomas Hochland: a patrol member sprained his ankle badly and had to be ‘abba’ed’ out of the bundus. The PL received his Chief Scout’s Award in 2017.
He did not stop there. A warrant course was attended, he became assistant troop scouter and Rover Scout. He was elected chair of the Combretum Youth Forum and the Vice-Chair of the National Youth Forum.
He was roped into 2nd Windhoek, and helped establish that Group to become one of the most active Groups in Windhoek.
During his studies, he had the opportunity to attend a semester at a German University. Instead of being ‘just a student’ for a while, he soon found himself a Scout Group to join and to help. Because of that, he is now a registered alumni of Scouts America.
His contribution did not end there! He started organizing one big event in Combretum Region after the other. He organized numerous Kontiki events, PLTC’s, Winter Wonders, even Soccer Tournaments. And the very popular IBU was his doing from the word ‘go’! He also regularly helps as tutor at Adult Leader Training events.
In the words of a volunteer leader – he does not say much, but if you look again, it’s done!
Kenai, Brother Bear, for your never-ending, especially distinguished services to the Association, the Chief Scout bestows upon you the Order of the Silver Welwitschia.

In the beginning it was just the fun part that kept her in Scouting. When she became a Rover Scout and learned that there is more to Scouting than just fun.
She joined a Warrant Course here in Windhoek and got hooked to the idea of starting an own Group. And she found a venue at one of the schools, and she got herself some help, and that way 2nd Windhoek was started.
It was not easy going at first – the school did not allow the Group to use any facilities, just the school grounds. And the lights were switched off overnight, to save on the electricity bill. So a different venue had to be found. The next venue was far better – plenty of space, lights on during those long winter nights, even access to ablution. But only a tiny storage space, and a strict ‘no’ when it came to requests to alter and improve the (outside) facilities to suit the group’s needs.
The present facilities now have everything the group needs. But the buildings are old, in need of renovation, which cost money. And there was a municipal bill to shoulder. And the group was growing, and with that, the need for additional leaders and additional activities and additional funds was growing. And the Parent’s Committee said they would help, but did not do anything – to the point where hard, unpleasant decisions had to be taken.
Between all that, the Scouter became involved with National duties, fulfilling the role of National Commissioner: Rovers over six years.
And she is still a regular at all the Regional Cubbing events, helping where she can and as best as she can.

The Chief Scout therefore awards Tully from 2nd with the Medal of Merit for her unwavering commitment to her Group, the Region and Scouts of Namibia in general.

Her career also started with cubbing and scouting in Windhoek. She soon found herself helping at cub meetings beyond the call for duty as Cub Instructor - so as Rover she became Assistant Pack Scouter, helping at two groups simultaneously - 5th on Tuesdays, 2nd on Fridays.
She had to choose either/or. Her choice fell on 2nd, to which she took to like a fish to water. The Cub Den was renovated and decorated (which - by the way - earned her her Scout Name!), the records were updated, the Grand Howl got a special “Ahooou!” at the end, and soon the first Cubs earned their Leaping Wolf.
Personal childhood experiences let her choose a career path in psychology and child welfare. With this knowledge she joined the Medical Team at the WSJ in Korea as “Listening Ear” - very successfully.
This, and her general Scouting knowledge, earned her a place as volunteer at Scout Adventures in the UK - helping various English kids to enjoy the Great Outdoors in the Lakes District. Not sure who experienced the bigger adventure - the participants or Golden Quill!

For her enthusiasm and energetic input, the Chief Scout awards the Medal of Merit to Golden Quill - Annika.

Her Scouting career is not well-known to us. So we cannot vouch for a Long Service Medal yet.
She appeared somewhere along the line at the Windhoek Rover Crew and at 2nd Windhoek and at some Warrant Training Courses.
What struck us is her cheerful nature, her willingness to help and her engagement in numerous big events like PLTC, etc. And we found out that she has been doing volunteer work with a number of conservation-oriented NGO’s – a true Scout is a Friend of Nature!
And we found out that she is one of the main organizers at the Umbrella Initiative in her spare time – a true Scout helps others at all times!
And that always with a big smile – a true Scout smiles and whistles under all difficulties!

For carrying the Scouting Spirit beyond her regular tasks as Assistant Troop Scouter to her social and private life, the Chief Scout awards Waffels from 2nd a Certificate of Merit.

Following in her sisters footsteps, she also started off as a Brownie way back when. And continued as a Girl Guide. When her sister left for studying in South Africa, she took over at 7th Windhoek and that is where she also got hooked to the Scout Programme.

She got involved in the Training Team, teaching younger leaders the tricks of the trade and is active at National Level.

To Balu (Antje), the Chief Scout awards you the 40-year bar to the Long Service Medal, for 42 years of dedicated service respectively.

She started off as Brownies way back when. And continued as a Girl Guide. When she turned 16, she was tasked to undertake a service project at Cubs at 7th Windhoek. And that is where she got hooked to the Scout Programme.
After her studies she returned as Pack Scouters, at 5th Windhoek. She got involved in the Training Team, teaching younger leaders the tricks of the trade and is active at National Level.

To Sonja (Akela), the Chief Scout awards you the 40-year bar to the Long Service Medal, for 43 years of dedicated service respectively.

She joined the Cubs in her home town because they all had ‘such fancy uniforms’. Well, the uniform part later faded, the activities got her hooked!
She joined the Windhoek Rover Crew when she started studying – that is where we got hold of her.
After some training, she decided to plunge into the deep end – she wanted to start up her own Group. And she got it going – through several hardships, with several setbacks, but even more important – with a lot of successes!

To Akela Tully from 2nd, the Chief Scout awards you the Long Service Medal after 25 years of dedicated service!

He first visited Cubs at the tender age of 1 – whenever Opa could not fulfill his grandfatherly babysitting duties. Obviously he could not join in the fun and games, so he sat in his rocking chair and cheered the Cubs along.
At 6 he was eventually, at looong last allowed to take the promise and become a true Cub.
He went through his Cubbing career and his Scouting career. He was chairperson of the Combretum Youth Forum, he was a Rover Scout, he joined several courses, and went on as Adult Leader.

To Kenai from 2nd, the Chief Scout awards you the Long Service Medal after 22 years of dedicated service.

She was first invested into Cubs at 5th Windhoek in 2006.
She went through her Cubbing Career, and afterwards Scouting career, all at 5th.
When she decided to return to the Cubs – first as Cub Instructor, and after some training, as Assistant Pack Scouter – right up to now.

The Chief Scout awards the Long Service Medal to Baghira (Tanja) from 5th for 20 years of dedicated service.

She told us she was invested into Cubs at 3rd the year before the “Great March”. She vividly remembers marching through the streets of Windhoek on the occasion of the 100-year anniversary of the Scout Movement in 2007.
She stayed on at 3rd through her Scouting career. After returning from studies, she found 3rd had closed down, so she joined ‘the second best option’ – 2nd Windhoek.
I am sure by now she is convinced that 2nd was a great choice!

The Chief Scout awards the Long Service Medal to Goldie from 2nd for 20 years of dedicated service.
