In the beginning it was just the fun part that kept her in Scouting. When she became a Rover Scout and learned that there is more to Scouting than just fun.
She joined a Warrant Course here in Windhoek and got hooked to the idea of starting an own Group. And she found a venue at one of the schools, and she got herself some help, and that way 2nd Windhoek was started.
It was not easy going at first – the school did not allow the Group to use any facilities, just the school grounds. And the lights were switched off overnight, to save on the electricity bill. So a different venue had to be found. The next venue was far better – plenty of space, lights on during those long winter nights, even access to ablution. But only a tiny storage space, and a strict ‘no’ when it came to requests to alter and improve the (outside) facilities to suit the group’s needs.
The present facilities now have everything the group needs. But the buildings are old, in need of renovation, which cost money. And there was a municipal bill to shoulder. And the group was growing, and with that, the need for additional leaders and additional activities and additional funds was growing. And the Parent’s Committee said they would help, but did not do anything – to the point where hard, unpleasant decisions had to be taken.
Between all that, the Scouter became involved with National duties, fulfilling the role of National Commissioner: Rovers over six years.
And she is still a regular at all the Regional Cubbing events, helping where she can and as best as she can.
The Chief Scout therefore awards Tully from 2nd with the Medal of Merit for her unwavering commitment to her Group, the Region and Scouts of Namibia in general.
