🌍 WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY | 5 June 2026

Nature is not separate from development—it is its foundation.

As we mark , we are reminded that biodiversity underpins food security, jobs, tourism, fisheries, livestock farming, and water security. When ecosystems deteriorate, the impacts are felt most by vulnerable communities.

In her latest blog, Bernadette Shivute, Sustainable Finance Specialist and Project Lead at UNDP Namibia, highlights why protecting biodiversity is not just an environmental imperative, but a development priority for Namibia.

"From community-based natural resource management to innovative biodiversity finance solutions, Namibia's experience shows that local action can deliver global impact. Because safeguarding nature is not only about protecting the environment, it is about securing a more sustainable, inclusive, and resilient future for all."

👏🏽 Kudos to the Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism MEFT and all partners working to safeguard Namibia's natural heritage for generations to come.

Access Bank and UNDP Namibia are exploring opportunities for collaboration to advance inclusive and sustainable economic development in Namibia, while leveraging broader opportunities across the SADC region.

Discussions focused on supporting SMEs and entrepreneurs through innovative financing solutions, strengthening value chains, advancing gender-responsive and climate-smart investments, and promoting digital inclusion to expand economic opportunities for all Namibians.

The dialogue also highlighted the role of the private sector in driving sustainable development, creating jobs, and enabling local businesses to benefit from regional trade opportunities under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

UNDP Namibia joins the world in celebrating International Day for Biological Diversity.

On this day, we are reminded that biodiversity is the foundation of life, supporting ecosystems, livelihoods, and climate resilience. In Namibia, our rich natural heritage is not only a source of pride, but a vital resource for sustainable development and community well-being.

Through partnerships with government, communities, and stakeholders, UNDP Namibia continues to support conservation efforts, restore degraded landscapes, and promote nature-based solutions that protect biodiversity while strengthening livelihoods.

Let us all play our part in safeguarding nature, for people, for planet, and for future generations. 🌿

Advancing inclusive education requires more than policy, it demands action, partnership, and accountability.

UNDP Namibia joined a high-level breakfast dialogue on promoting the rights and welfare of children with disabilities, co-organised by Unesco Namibia, the Embassy of Finland in Windhoek - Suomen suurlähetystö Windhoekissa, and the Ombetja Yehinga Organisation.

Joined by Hon. Dr. Emma Kantema, Minister of Gender Equality and Child Welfare, and Mr. Nicolaas G. Davids, Deputy Executive Officer in the Office of the Vice President of the Republic of Namibia, who delivered remarks on behalf of H.E. Lucia Witbooi, the discussion reinforced a critical message: inclusive education is not merely a policy ambition, but a commitment that must be reflected in our systems, institutions, and everyday actions.

From accessible learning environments and inclusive teaching practices to strengthened data, financing, and communication systems, building inclusion requires deliberate investment and sustained collaboration across government, civil society, and development partners.

Importantly, inclusion means ensuring that children and young people with disabilities are both beneficiaries, and active participants, whose voices shape the decisions that affect their lives.

UNDP remains committed to supporting Namibia in strengthening inclusive systems that uphold dignity, expand opportunity, and ensure that no one is left behind.

UNDP Namibia was privileged to participate in the 2nd African Management Development Institute's Network(AMDIN) Conference hosted at NIPAM Namibia, under the theme “Transformative Public Service Leadership for Sustainable Development and Inclusive Growth in Africa.”

At a time when building resilient, adaptive, and inclusive public institutions is more critical than ever, discussions over the past two days underscored the central role of leadership, innovation, and strengthened systems thinking across the public service.

Amanda Serumaga, UNDP Resident Representative shared perspective on resilience in the public service in the context of external shocks and climate adaptation. She noted:
👉 Resilience is not simply about managing the next crisis — it is about building institutions that continue to function, learn, and deliver under changing conditions.

This requires moving beyond reactive approaches towards a public service that can:
anticipate risks
adapt early
integrate systems thinking

Effective governance is the foundation on which sustainable development rests, and strengthening resilience means integrating climate risks into national planning, public finance, infrastructure, and service delivery, while investing in foresight, risk management, and data systems that enable proactive decision-making.

Stakeholders gathered at the Resource Mobilisation Workshop, held from 12–13 May 2026 at Avani Windhoek Hotel, to strengthen and align climate and development financing concept notes that support Namibia’s sustainable development priorities.

The workshop is reviewing several strategic initiatives focused on climate resilience, clean and renewable energy, circular economy solutions, sustainable health infrastructure, and forest restoration to enhance ecosystem resilience and livelihoods.

This engagement comes at a critical time as Namibia implements NDP6 and advances the review of NDC 2.0 toward the development of NDC 3.0. The workshop aims to ensure that all project concepts are fully aligned with national priorities, evolving population realities, climate commitments, and the country’s long-term development agenda.

Technical experts and stakeholders are working together to identify financing, institutional, and implementation gaps, consolidate inputs from across sectors, and strengthen proposals that complement the efforts of the Office of the Prime Minister; the Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism (MEFT); the Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Land Reform; the Ministry of Works and Transport; and the Ministry of Finance, while accelerating progress toward national and global climate targets.
