Our regional webinar on intersex advocacy developments in East and Southern Africa was a huge success, and we're excited to share some of the key takeaways with you:
1. Advocacy for Legal, Institutional, and Administrative Reforms: Pushing for changes to Section 5 of the Children Act (Kenya), which outlines the state's obligation to realize the rights of the child [1]. We must ensure that the state and elsewhere in East and Southern Africa take measures to progressively achieve the full realization of these rights.
2. Multi-Sectoral Approach: Working at national, regional, and global levels to increase awareness, advocate for institutional reforms, and lobby for services and changes that ensure the inclusion of intersex persons in all spheres.
3. Amplify Intersex Persons and Their Voices: Empowering intersex individuals to tell their stories and strengthening organizations and allies. We believe in the Ubuntu philosophy - "I am because you are" - and that human dignity is for all.
4. Movement Building: Building a strong, inclusive, and sustainable movement that brings together intersex individuals, organizations, and allies to advocate for intersex rights and inclusivity.
5. Evidence-Based Advocacy: Working with regional and policy frameworks to make informed decisions and drive meaningful change.
These takeaways will guide our future efforts to promote intersex rights and inclusivity in East and Southern Africa. Thank you Jinsiangu, the African Intersex Movement, the panelists and intersex activists and everyone who participated in the webinar and contributed to its success!
