📢 PUBLIC CLARIFICATION

The Basic Income Grant Coalition of Namibia (BIG Coalition) wishes to clarify that the recently announced Conditional Basic Income Grant is a programme of the Government of the Republic of Namibia and not a programme of the BIG Coalition.

While we welcome all efforts aimed at reducing poverty and improving the livelihoods of vulnerable Namibians, it is important that the public clearly distinguishes between the Government's Conditional Basic Income Grant initiative and the BIG Coalition's long-standing advocacy for a Universal Basic Income Grant (UBIG).

The BIG Coalition continues to advocate for a Universal Basic Income Grant that is accessible to all eligible beneficiaries without conditions, as a sustainable and effective tool to address poverty, inequality, and economic insecurity in Namibia.

A Universal Basic Income Grant is an economic right for every Namibian. It means a monthly, no-strings-attached cash payment for all Namibians aged 0–59 years, not a once-off grant and not a conditional benefit.

We encourage the public, media, and stakeholders to ensure accurate reference to the respective programmes and their implementing institutions.

Every dollar from the national budget should indeed benefit Namibians. One of the most direct, transparent, and effective ways to achieve this is through the implementation of a Universal Basic Income Grant (UBIG) of N$500/person/month for all Namibians aged 0-59.

As government seeks to ensure that public spending translates into tangible improvements in employment, services, and living standards, a Basic Income Grant offers a practical mechanism to reach every citizen, particularly those who remain excluded from economic opportunities.

Evidence from Namibia's own Basic Income Grant pilot project in Otjivero/Omitara demonstrated improvements in food security, school attendance, local economic activity, and community well-being. A Universal Basic Income Grant would not only reduce poverty and inequality but also stimulate local economies by putting purchasing power directly into the hands of ordinary Namibians.

If the government's priority is truly "People, Productivity and Prudence," then investing directly in people should be at the centre of budget reform. No Namibian should be left behind while the country possesses the resources to guarantee a basic level of economic security for all.

The true measure of every dollar spent is whether it improves the lives of citizens. A Universal Basic Income Grant is one of the clearest ways to ensure that it does.
