Lunar Eclipse on 28 August 2026.
Namibia can observe a Lunar Eclipse in the early morning hours on 28.August 2026. The moon will enter the penumbra at 03:25. In this outer part of the Earth's shadow, an observer on the Moon would see the Earth partially obscuring the Sun's disk, but not completely covering it. As a result the Moon's brightness will begin to dim, as it is less strongly illuminated by the Sun, but it remains illuminated. The the main shadow (umbra) will start to move over the moon about an hour later at 04:35. Maximum eclipse will occur at 06:14, when 93% of the Moon's disk will lie in the shadow of the earth. The moon will be out of the umbra at 7:53 and completely uncovered at 9:02 in the morning.

There’s plenty happening in the skies this August! Look out for the Perseid Meteor Shower, peaking around 13 August, and set an early alarm for 28 August, when a partial lunar eclipse will be visible from Namibia before the Moon sets. Venus shines brightly in the evening sky, while Mars and Saturn make their appearances in the early hours. Plus, meet Lyra, our Constellation of the Month, home to brilliant Vega and the famous Ring Nebula.

Sea Turtles in Namibia: Research & Conservation

This illustrated public lecture explores the first systematic study of sea turtles at the Kunene River mouth, where researchers documented over 2,100 turtle sightings, confirmed the first recorded mating events, and launched Namibia's first-ever satellite tracking of sea turtles. Learn why this unique stretch of coastline could be far more important for sea turtle conservation than previously thought, and hear about plans for future research along the entire Namibian coast.
