🌽 Precious proudly holds local red maize, a seed passed down through generations and protected by rural women farmers in Zambia.

“We have our local maize. These seeds have fed our families for generations and continue to help us survive even during difficult seasons.”

Local red maize is food, it carries culture, biodiversity, indigenous knowledge, and climate resilience. While industrial agriculture continues to promote uniform seed systems, rural women continue protecting local seeds that sustain communities and strengthen food sovereignty.

Our sister reminds us that the answers already exist within our communities. 🌾

🌾 This year, we celebrate the strength, wisdom, and resilience of rural women farmers across Southern Africa and beyond.

Women farmers continue to protect seeds, preserve biodiversity, feed communities, and build resilience in the face of climate crisis, hunger, and inequality. Yet despite their vital role, many still face barriers to land, resources, markets, and decision making.

At our upcoming Consultative Dialogue, we honour and amplify the voices of rural women who are already building solutions rooted in agroecology, food sovereignty, climate justice, and collective care.

🌱 “We Have Answers!” is both a theme and a declaration.

Across Southern Africa, rural women have long protected seeds, preserved indigenous knowledge, practised agroecology, and built resilience in the face of climate crisis and food insecurity.

While dominant food systems continue to prioritise profit over people, rural women are already creating solutions rooted in biodiversity, care, justice, and community resilience.

This campaign amplifies those lived solutions and affirms that the answers to the climate and food crises already exist within our communities.

As we look forward to the upcoming dialogue, we continue to celebrate the strength, resilience and hard work of rural women in our communities. From protecting our indigenous seeds and caring for the land, to building resilient food systems and supporting our families through agriculture and small livestock farming, rural women remain at the heart of community development.
Together we continue to raise our voices, share solutions and create a better future for the next generation. Rural women are not only food producers, but also guardians of culture, knowledge, land and life.

🌱 WHY THIS DIALOGUE MATTERS 🌱

Across Southern Africa, rural women continue to face the harsh realities of the climate crisis every day.Droughts, floods, rising food prices, disappearing indigenous seeds, and growing food insecurity.

But even in the midst of these challenges, rural women are already leading solutions. From saving indigenous seeds and practising agroecology to restoring soils and strengthening community resilience, women across our region are building sustainable food systems from the ground up.

Our upcoming Consultative Dialogue: “We Have Answers; Building Resilient Food Systems” is more than just a meeting. It is a space to amplify grassroots solutions, strengthen solidarity, influence policy, and affirm that the answers to the climate and food crises already exist within our communities.
