🌿 **Supporting Sustainable Livelihoods Through Devil’s Claw Harvesting** 🌿
We are pleased to share the recent signing of the Devil’s Claw Purchase Agreements for the 2026 harvesting season in the Nyae Nyae and N≠a Jaqna Conservancies.
📍 Mr. Gerrie Cwi, Chairperson of the NNCCF, signed the agreement with Mr. Mukriste Mbunga from EcoSo Dynamics.
📍 Mr. Jason Jona, Chairperson of NJCCF, also signed the agreement with Mr. Mukriste Mbunga from EcoSo Dynamics.
While this is an annual process, it remains an important step in sustaining community-based natural resource management and securing market access for local harvesters.
Devil’s Claw harvesting continues to be a key source of income for communities in both conservancies. In 2025, a total of 442 harvesters participated, generating N$ 2,574,429 in income directly to harvesters (excluding conservancy management fees). Encouragingly, over 50% of harvesters are women, reflecting strong participation across communities.
Both conservancies produce high-quality Devil’s Claw that is certified Organic and FairWild, with Nyae Nyae also certified under Fair for Life, ensuring sustainable harvesting practices and access to premium markets.
Following the agreement signing, conservancies will:
✔️ Train and register harvesters in villages
✔️ Issue harvesting permits
✔️ Begin the 2026 harvesting season
This ongoing work highlights the value of community-driven conservation models that support both livelihoods and sustainable resource use.
