Last week, NAFSAN was honored to support the hosting of the 4th Transformation Learning Lab in Namibia, bringing together 40 changemakers from six countries to explore what it takes to build food systems that truly work for both people and the planet.

The Learning Lab was a powerful reminder that transformation is a long-term process yet consists of crucial short term steps, and it happens when diverse voices come together to share experiences, challenge assumptions, and learn from one another. As participants reflected on the progress made since the previous Lab in India, a common thread emerged: meaningful change is possible when collaboration, leadership, and local action are at the center.

Through dialogue, field-based learning, and cross-country exchanges, the week reinforced the importance of inclusive food systems that leave no one behind.

Over four productive days, government representatives, civil society organizations, farmers’ organizations, technical working groups, youth representatives, and development partners came together in Swakopmund to chart the way forward for the implementation of Namibia’s Sustainable Food Systems Transformation Agenda (STAS).

The workshop brought together representatives from AU-NEPAD, the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Land Reform, the Namibia National Farmers Union (NNFU), GIZ F4R, the Namibia Nature Foundation (NNF), NAFSAN, and various representatives from the technical working groups to strengthen collaboration, align priorities, and identify practical next steps for implementation.

Participants shared ongoing initiatives that contribute to food systems transformation, explored opportunities for partnership, and reflected on key cross-cutting issues such as climate change adaptation. Presentations on the National Adaptation Plan and ongoing food systems programmes highlighted the importance of coordinated action in building resilient and sustainable food systems for Namibia.

Among the key outcomes of the workshop was the establishment of the STAS Secretariat/Steering Committee, which will support coordination and help drive momentum as implementation progresses.

As we move from planning to action, the workshop reaffirmed a shared commitment to working together to create more sustainable, resilient, and inclusive food systems for all Namibians.

DID YOU MISS US AT THE INVEST IN AFRICA TRADE EXPO?

Last week, our team of nutritionists represented NAFSAN at the Invest in Africa 2026 Trade Expo & Business Summit, held on 28–29 May 2026 in Swakopmund.

At our exhibition stand, we shared information about NAFSAN’s mandate, programmes, and ongoing efforts to advance food systems and nutrition security in Namibia. We also highlighted the important role civil society organisations play in addressing food and nutrition challenges and contributing to sustainable development.

As advocacy remains one of NAFSAN’s key pillars, we recognise the importance of engaging with like-minded organisations, investors, policymakers, and development partners. Platforms such as these provide valuable opportunities to network, build partnerships, and strengthen collaboration towards a common goal of improved food and nutrition outcomes.

The Expo was held with the aim of unlocking Africa’s trade, investment, and industrial growth. As a civil society organisation, we remain committed to ensuring that the work and impact of CSOs are visible, while advocating for increased investment in food systems and nutrition as critical drivers of human development, economic growth, and resilience.

The NAFSAN Secretariat, Board members, and Youth Leader representative met with the Minister of Finance, Hon. Ericah Shafudah and members of her team, responsible for policy development, communication and public relation, taxation, as well as social protection.

It was an extremely fruitful and productive meeting. We discussed the dire and urgent need to address the recently confirmed rise in child stunting (chronic malnutrition, now at 30%) and other forms of undernutrition.

Furthermore, we focused on the rise of overweight and obesity, which is linked to an increase in non-communicable diseases and other health risks that are having a significant impact on Namibia’s overall economy in terms of public health and the general workforce.

Several short and long-term solutions were discussed and both entities committed to work as partners in finding solutions for the benefit of the Namibian people and especially children.
We are looking forward to working together with Hon Shafudah and her dynamic team, and will continuously share the milestones, upcoming events and other achievements along this journey.

CSONA, the SUN civil society alliance in Malawi, is proving that advocacy works. By partnering with parliamentary nutrition champions and the SUN Civil Society Network, they’ve fought to secure a bigger national nutrition budget – and to make sure those resources actually reach the districts that need them most. But this isn’t just a story about politics and budgets; it’s about what happens when funding reaches communities.
In one school, a teacher sums it up perfectly: “Because when I have healthy kids, my teaching will be more effective.” From parliament to classroom, this is what change looks like.

🎥 As the stocktake in Lyon shines a light on delivery, this story from Malawi shows what coordinated civil society advocacy can achieve.

👇 As announced you can now watch the full video below:

Through collaboration between the Malawi SUN Civil Society Alliance, a parliamentary nutrition champion, and support from the SUN Civil Society Network, advocacy helped secure a bigger national nutrition budget and pushed for those resources to reach the districts where they are most needed. The story also shows how national advocacy connects to action at community level.

✅ This is why civil society matters:

📢 pushing for action
🔍 tracking delivery
💰 following the money
🏡 making sure commitments reach communities

This is also the added value of the SUN CSN: supporting national alliances, strengthening coordinated advocacy, and helping connect local realities to national and global accountability efforts.

N4G must be about more than pledges: it must be about accountability, follow-through and impact.

🌍 Malawi’s example shows that when civil society is organised, connected from community to national level, and able to engage decision-makers strategically, progress is possible.

One year on since , governments must now report on their commitments and show how they are turning nutrition promises into concrete results for communities. This is the moment for accountability, transparency and action.

💪 The SUN CSN stands ready to support.

With over 75% of the world’s flowering plants and over 30% of all crops relying on bees for pollination, they contribute significantly to the food we eat every day, and in fact, human survival depends on bees, biodiversity and a healthy environment through organic agriculture and sustainable food systems.

This is why we celebrate World Bee Day every , 20 May (www.fao.org/world-bee-day) to raise awareness about the crucial role that bees play, to appreciate the tireless work of bees around the world, and to also thank those who take care of our bees and help in making their valuable products directly available.

For us, the various Namibian beekepers and their respective organisations, such as the Beekeeping Association of Namibia (BAN - www.beekeepingassociation.com.na) and the United Beekepeers of Namibia (UBON - www.facebook.com/unitedbeekeepersofnamibia) are playing an important role.
