PROCUREMENT WATCH| The Institute of Public Policy Research (IPPR) on Thursday warned that Namibia risks facing deeper governance challenges if key transparency and accountability laws remain unimplemented, particularly as the country moves closer to oil and gas production.

The executive director of IPPR Graham Hopwood said Namibia already has laws and policy frameworks aimed at preventing corruption, but a lack of implementation continues to undermine their effectiveness.

"We have some of the building blocks and pieces in place, but what is lacking is implementation," Hopwood said.

He further added that stronger political commitments are needed to enforce existing legislation.

The IPPR research associate Fredrico Links raised longstanding concern around health procurement on recurring investigations and reports of irregularities involving medical and pharmaceutical supplies, saying that allegations of corruption in the sector have persisted for years without meaningful resolution.

“The story is the same. We are seeing the same issues we saw ten years ago," said Links.

He also called for stronger oversight, greater transparency and the rollout of e-procurement systems, particularly within the health sector.

“The stakes are becoming higher and higher. We are talking about hundreds of millions of dollars. And it is ordinary people who rely on the public healthcare system who are being adversely affected, " he said.

N$10 ONLY| Education minister Sanet Steenkamp said state schools must charge only N$ 10 per application form. She said where schools are charging more than that the public should report the issue to the office of the regional director.

Confidente is aware that some schools are charging from N$100 to N$ 300 per application form.

“Circular Form Ed 3 of 2026 puts a limit of N$10 per application form that schools can ask. This fee is to cover the cost of the photocopies for the application forms and administrative matters,” Steenkamp said.

She added that parents who are unable to afford the cost of the forms should present themselves to the regional office in order to provide them with assistance.

“The ministry wishes to ensure that no child is left behind and will do its utmost to ensure this. We are currently exploring different options of doing away with the fee completely, looking at online options for application or mixed methods for parents who have connectivity challenge,"

URGENT TRAFFIC ALERT: ROAD CLOSURE AND ALTERNATIVE ROUTES FOR SATURDAY, 20 JUNE 2026

ATTENTION ALL MOTORISTS AND LOGISTICS OPERATORS IN WINDHOEK

This serves as an urgent public notice to all motorists, commercial transport fleets, and daily commuters who will not be participating in the public interest demonstration scheduled for Saturday, 20 June 2026.

To avoid severe traffic gridlock, extensive operational delays, and potential entrapment in highway bottlenecks, you are strongly advised to completely avoid the B1 Western Bypass corridor near the Northern Industrial Area between 07h00 and 19h00.

The organized motoring public, backed by thousands of affected citizens, will be executing a massive assembly on the tarmac demanding the immediate removal of the hazardous, bolted plastic-and-metal barriers. Due to the scale of this demonstration, normal traffic flow along this section of the national highway will be severely compromised.

APPROVED ALTERNATIVE ROUTE:
Motorists who need to transit between the northern and southern sectors of the city without disruption are directed to utilize the following alternative arterial bypass route:

Divert via the NaTIS / Van Eck Strip: Utilize the main arterial road running directly past the NaTIS Valley testing station, positioned directly opposite the NamPower Van Eck Power Station.
This alternative route will remain fully accessible, unobstructed, and clear of protest action, allowing you to bypass the Northern Industrial Area bottleneck cleanly.

We appeal to non-participating motorists for their understanding and cooperation. Please plan your travel times accordingly, depart early, and utilize the recommended detour to ensure your transit remains safe and efficient.
POWER TO THE ORGANISED MOTORIST
