🌊 Happy World Ocean Day 🌊

This past Saturday, CeMEES proudly commemorated World Ocean Day 2026 at the Swakopmund Museum under the theme "Strong Marine Protected Areas for Our Blue Planet."

We were honoured to welcome over 100 school learners, alongside presenters, exhibitors, stakeholders, and marine professionals who came together to celebrate, learn, and raise awareness about the importance of protecting our ocean.

A heartfelt thank you to all our speakers, exhibitors, and participating organizations for helping make the day such a success. Your presentations, interactive displays, and passion for ocean conservation inspired and educated our learners, leaving a lasting impact. Special appreciation goes to .society.namibia for sharing your knowledge and showcasing the important work being done to protect our ocean.

We would also like to express our sincere gratitude to our sponsors .swk for their generous support. Your partnership helped make this event a success, and we could not have done it without you.

As we celebrate World Ocean Day today, let us continue working together to protect our ocean, strengthen marine protected areas, and inspire the next generation of ocean stewards.

CeMEES had the opportunity to engage with Geography teachers from the northern namibia visiting the coast for their educational excursion πŸŒŠπŸ“š

The excursion brought together different presenters who shared knowledge and insights on various coastal and geographical topics.
CeMEES presented on the Benguela Current and Benguela Upwelling System, highlighting its importance in shaping Namibia’s climate, supporting marine life, and sustaining the country’s fisheries.

The learning experience also included educational visits to the Walvis Bay Lagoon, the Pink Lake, and Dune 7, where further discussions took place on coastal conservation, tourism, dunes, and the unique coastal environment of Namibia.

Hands-on learning experiences such as these help strengthen education, environmental awareness, and appreciation for Namibia’s ocean and coastline. πŸŒπŸ’™

🚒 Did you know ships can transport marine life across the world without anyone seeing it?

Ballast water, used to stabilise vessels, often contains tiny marine organisms. When released in new environments, these organisms can become invasive species, disrupting ecosystems and threatening local biodiversity.

Once established, invasive species are extremely difficult to control, making prevention and proper management essential.

🌊 Protecting marine ecosystems starts with understanding how they are affected

✨ Did you know the ocean can glow in the dark?

This phenomenon, known as bioluminescence, allows certain marine organisms to produce light through chemical reactions in their bodies. From tiny plankton to deep-sea fish, many species use this ability to survive in the dark ocean.

They use light to communicate, attract prey, avoid predators, and even camouflage themselves. In some places, entire shorelines can glow at night when the water is disturbed.

🌊 This is just one example of how fascinating and complex marine life can be🦭

Have you ever seen glowing water before?
