Silver Lining is a charitable organisation based in Swakopmund, Namibia. Our core work is providing basic needs such as food parcels, second-hand clothing and household goods as well as jerseys and blankets to 40 individual families. With the help of in-kind donors like you from around the world, we can reach many more families and make a difference. We also give support to handicapped children an

d support mothers and children at a local clinic. In addition, we support three daycares / preschools/ afternoon care centres in Democratic Resettlement Community (DRC) (an informal settlement in Swakopmund), Matutura and Tulinawa through teacher training, supply of teacher resources, toys, books and upgrading of facilities.

A 'KAMBASHU' GETS MOVED FROM ONE SITE TO ANOTHER

One of Silver Lining's recipients was totally devastated when she was told she could no longer stay on the property where she was living. She had nowhere to go and no hope for the future and sobbed openly at our first Silver Lining family gathering in February of this year. Eventually, she found a new place to relocate her 'Kambashu' and Silver Lining helped pay the transport costs of the building material from one area to another. She invited me to go and see her newly re-erected home. Silver Lining gave her some 'house warming" gifts: a second hand pot, frying pan, a blanket and 2nd hand clothing. All were donated by local donors. She was over-the-moon-grateful and happy. The cute, but very serious child in the pic is her "last born", wearing a beanie donated by Silver Lining long ago.

Yesterday saw our standard food parcels delivered to 17 of our 50 families. This involved 2 vehicles and 3 volunteers on both Thursday afternoon and Friday morning. So grateful for all the help.

We work on a 3 monthly cycle, so each family receives a food parcel once every 3 months. Recipients have learned over time that punctuality is important and so is saying thank you and most deliveries, like yesterday's, go very smoothly.

OUR RECIPIENTS VOLUNTEER AND GIVE BACK!
Today was Food Parcel Collection Day in preparation for tomorrow's August Food Parcel Delivery Day to 17 Silver Lining families. Mareta and I enjoyed the company of these two Silver Lining recipients, Ndapandula and Sylvia. They did all the packing into 34 black bags and all the " heavy lifting" out of and back into the cars. So great that SL recipients are willing to volunteer their time and give back and help us! They did a sterling job and we are so grateful for their help.

Thanks too to Mareta for help with transport and for providing juice and biscuits.

WHAT IS A 'KAMBASHU'?

Most Namibians know this means an informal shack or makeshift dwelling, typically in an urban informal settlement.

Silver Lining has helped build many 'Kambashus', add-on rooms, fences over time, with the help of a very generous local donor, who supplies wooden pallets that get re-fashioned into wooden homes or other structures.

The neatness of the finished product is often exceptional and it is a life-changing moment if you can receive a load of wooden pallets to build a 'Kambashu', or add an extra room to your "shack" or "ghetto" - other terms used for "Kambashu".

Over time, some 10 lucky recipients have received wood to build with and all are super grateful. Our latest recipient who built the home in the picture, wrote: " Morning Oumma is my kambashu. I'm very happy to much."

WHOOOHOOO! YIPPPEEE! YAY YAY! 20 AUGUST IS OFFICIALLY SILVER LINING'S 6TH ANNIVERSARY/BIRTHDAY....

20th August 2020, not long after Covid struck and put Namibia into serious lockdowns, is the day Silver Lining received its first-ever monetary donation from my sister, Pam in Australia. That donation was divided amongst 3 different recipients.

Today, exactly six years later, we now support 50 Silver Lining families (That's 243 household members) AND 3 Preschools with close on to 100 kids. Our many local and international donors have helped Silver Lining grow and flourish.

Over 6 years, we have given our approved families:
*countless food parcels
*countless second hand clothing/household gifts
*countless new,hand knitted jerseys and blankets
*help with school uniform and stationery
*medical advice and other help where necessary
*built and helped build at least 10 homes
*gifted many Baby Boxes/Buckets to Expectant Moms
* +++++++

BUT IT'S NOT ABOUT THE NUMBERS AND STATISTICS

It's about much more important things like:
*giving hope
*creating smiles
*helping to build the future generation
*being the someone to turn to in time of need

AND MOST IMPORTANTLY.......
* just being there for our members when we are needed to help with our limited resources.

We do our best to do what we can with what we have, and help however and whenever we can. We can't perform miracles, but we like to believe we can make the odd bit of magic happen sometimes.

FINAL YEAR NURSING STUDENT GETS NEW SMARTPHONE FROM AUSTRALIAN DONORS

In her final year of nursing studies, one Namibian student received a new cellphone and funds towards a nursing jacket from
four Australian donors. These four ladies, who visited Namibia recently, learned about the many difficulties that Namibian tertiary students face. They held a first fundraiser on their return and raised money to help Silver Lining's tertiary students. The recipient wrote a lovely thank-you message that was very well received by the donors who worked hard to raise funds for Silver Lining.

SILVER LINING GIVES A HELPING HAND AFTER A BREAK IN

After a devastating break in that robbed a Silver Lining family member of her gas bottle, phone, and stock, a
street-food seller received a new gas bottle, plate, and a
small cash gift toward a refill, so she can get back to feeding
her children through her business.

Silver Lining does not just give food parcels and second hand clothing. We listen to the needs of our 50 families and help wherever and however we can.

Thanks to our generous donors whose regular donations make it possible for us to help out when difficult circumstances present themselves.

A SURPRISE BLESSING DURING RECENT VISIT FROM USA DONORS

On 26 July, two USA visitors met three Silver Lining
families, gifting instant porridge, coffee, hot
chocolate, and large tubs of Vaseline, things most
families haven't been able to afford in years.
The final visit was to an older Silver Lining recipient.
She surprised everyone at the end
when she took the group's hands and prayed for
them in her own language, then presented each
visitor with a beaded necklace and a shopping bag:
long-lasting memories of Namibia for our USA
donors to keep.

10 VISITORS, LOTS OF FUN, 20 DONATED ROCKET STOVES +++

Five USA visitors and five Namibians recently spent the day with one Silver Lining family and two of our partner
preschools.

First stop: "the house that Silver Lining built," an early Silver Lining project. The owner welcomed the
group through his home and vegetable garden, built in part by USA donors on the tour.

At Elohim Kids Centre, Teacher Rosalia showed off five months of Silver Lining upgrades: a wooden pallet fence,
fresh paint, sand for the play area, a second-hand carpet, a repaired classroom floor (all from local Swakopmund donors), and teaching aids built from recycled materials.
Local donors surprised the 16 kids and 2 teachers with boxes of chocolate muffins, and, when opened there was a big "WOW" from all the kids.

Down the road at Fila's Daycare, 40+ children
sang and danced for the visitors, who left Fila with stationery for the preschoolers and a few personal gifts.

As a direct result of this visit, a local donor gifted 20 Namibian Rocket Stoves (pictured), which cook on far less wood than an open fire. The first two stoves are already in use at family homes, with eighteen more on the way.

The same donors also gave beads for future craft workshops, second hand household items plus a cash gift.

July was an amazing month for Silver Lining! See our stats below the photo. So many international and local visitors saw first-hand what we do and how we do it! And many very generous donations followed! One lucky Silver Lining talented athlete received a brand new pair of Brooks running shoes. Thanks to everyone who took the time to visit us and learn more about our work.
