The Oshana Basketball School (OBS) is an after school basketball program for learners from grade 5 -12. It focuses on education and basketball and takes place every week from Monday to Friday at the Sam Nujoma Multi Purpose Centre in Ongwediva. There is space for 30 children, split up in two age groups, the “Rookies” (grade 5-7) and the “Juniors” (grade 8-12), whereas the potential “Junio
rs” are currently still being selected. The program was founded on the 01st of April 2017 by one of the Namibian Basketball Federation`s volunteer Paul Isernhinke and Co-founded Pondo Nailenge (President of NBF North), who has major impact on this program, and is the Coordinator to make sure, the project is in the hands of locals and to ensure its sustainability. Oshana Basketball School follows the concept of the successful, Windhoek-based, Basketball Artist School (BAS) Foundation. After school, the children immediately come to the Sam Nujoma Multi Purpose Center. There, they have lunch together, followed by tutorial time in either mathematics or English. Every day, after the tutorial time is finished, there is a basketball practice at the court of Valombola V.T.C. Oshana Basketball School`s aim is, to provide a better future for its children. Apart of the tutorial time, the values and soft skills that are demanded by OBS, educate the children in unique way. Teamwork, fairness, discipline or punctuality are only some of the moral behaviors that are transferred though this program. These are important abilities to not only become successful in life, but also to grow into well-educated and civilized adult. The report cards of the children, their new ability to take over responsibilities and their fast development of their basketball skills prove to every parent: Doing well in both, school and basketball, is not only possible, but the child will even improve in both areas. Die Oshana Basketball School ist ein außerschulisches Nachmittagsangebot in der nördlichen Region Namibias und wurde im April 2017 gegründet. Die Basketballschule liegt in Ongwediva, einer 20.000 Einwohner Stadt im Norden Namibias, welcher auch als das Ovamboland bezeichnet wird. Kinder im Alter von zehn bis 18 Jahren werden nach jedem Schultag an der OBS betreut. Das Stipendium umfasst täglichen Förderunterricht in diversen Fächern, Basketballtraining, Life Skills, Mittagessen, Sportkleidung und vieles mehr. Unsere Vision ist es, einen Ort zu errichten, an dem sich Kinder und Teenager wohlfühlen und durch Bildung und Sport eine bessere Zukunftsperspektive erhalten. Unsere Kinder kommen täglich nach der Schule zum Mittagessen an der OBS an. Der Schwerpunkt Bildung konzentriert sich auf die schulischen Leistungen unserer Kinder. Unsere Räumlichkeiten bieten Platz und Ruhe für intensiven und individuell angepassten Nachhilfeunterricht in verschiedenen Fächern. Teil des täglichen Programms an der Oshana Basketball School ist natürlich das Basketballtraining. Das Basketballtraining findet auf einem gut erhaltenen Platz, 15 Minuten Fußmarsch entfernt vom OBS-Center statt. Die Rookies und Juniors trainieren in verschiedenen Trainingsgruppen. Für unsere Kinder ist die Oshana Basketball School ein nicht mehr wegzudenkender Teil ihres Lebens geworden. Daran sind nicht nur das Programm der OBS Schuld, sondern vor allem folgendes: Wir sind eine große Familie. Wenn die Kinder das OBS-Center betreten, dann wissen sie sofort, dass es bei uns nichts mehr gibt, vor dem sie sich verstecken, schämen oder fürchten müssen, dass man sich gegenseitig vertrauen kann, dass es Freunde und Trainer gibt, die für einen da sind und sich kümmern. Erste dieses Umfeld ermöglicht uns überhaupt unsere Vision einer besseren Perspektive für die Kinder zu ermöglichen. Das Familiäre Umfeld ist Herz und Seele der OBS und der Grund, warum wir es schon beim am Morgen kaum erwarten können beim Mittagessen wieder zusammenzusitzen.
