Maltahöhe Roots and Rights 🌿 Tradional Community Meeting

We were honoured by the strong turnout at the Maltahöhe Roots and Rights Traditional Community Meeting.

Elders shared memories, stories and wisdom, helping us understand our history and the importance of passing it on to younger generations. Our roots are our strength, and our rights are grounded in knowing where we come from.

The Maltahöhe youth structure was elected:

Day 3 & 4 - Gibeon 🌿

Day 3 took us to Gibeon, where we met with Gaob Hendrik Ismael Witbooi and the Senior Councillors to brief them on our engagement with the
|Khowesen youth and seek permission to engage the young people.

On Day 4, the young people came together and established their NTLA Youth Forum – |Khowesen structure. Congratulations to:

🌿 ROOTS AND RIGHTS: MALTÄHŌHE TRADITIONAL COMMUNITY WORKSHOP

Tomorrow, 24 August 2026, the NTLA Youth Forum an initiative of the Gaogu, brings the Roots and Rights journey to Maltahöhe, creating a space for community members and young people to reconnect with our history, discuss the challenges affecting our ancestral lands, and reflect on the rights and responsibilities of the Nama people.

The workshop will explore key issues including reparations definitions and context, ancestral land, mining and extractive industries, tourism and conservation, benefit-sharing, community participation, youth leadership and community mobilisation.

Most importantly, this is a space for community dialogue. We will listen to local experiences, identify priorities and concerns, and work together towards practical recommendations and actions for the community, the Gaogu and the NTLA Youth Forum.

Day 2 | Remembering Who We Are

Day Two of the NTLA Youth Forum’s Roots and Rights Tour began with Senior Councillor Cornelius Fredericks reminding the young people of who we are as Nama.

The session took us through the story of the Nama, from the arrival of the first settlers, through dispossession and colonial violence, to the laws and frameworks that continue to shape the rights of the Nama child today.

We explored UNDRIP, Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC), Access and Benefit Sharing (ABS), and the Ancestral Land Claims Commission Report, reflecting on what these frameworks mean for our people’s right to ancestral land, culture, resources and self-determination.

For us, learning our history is not simply about looking back. It is about understanding our rights, reclaiming our voice, and empowering the next generation to know what belongs to them.

The young people of the KharKhoen ||aes of Amperboo, thank you for welcoming us, engaging with us, and sharing this space of learning and reflection.

🌿 ROOTS & RIGHTS TOUR | DAY ONE

The NTLA Youth Forum has officially begun its Roots & Rights Tour.

On Day One, we arrived in Amperboo, the home of the !KarKhoen ||aes. We paid a courtesy visit to the House of Gaob David Hanse, where we sought permission to engage with the young people of the community.

We were received with warmth, love and generosity, and were honoured to receive the blessing of Gaos Susanna Hanse as we begin this journey with the community.

This is more than a tour. It is a journey back to our roots, our rights, our land, our history and our people. 🌱

From Daweb!gaos to the Amazon

In the heart of the Amazon in Ecuador, the NTLA Youth Forum presented a powerful reflection on what drives Indigenous activism: love for our people. The love that connected us to the land, animals and plants, robbed and now lost of that connection, and with it, that love for one another. Yet now, we burn with a desire to return to that love, to protect our land, carry our histories, defend our rights, and continue the work our ancestors began.

From the Nama lands of Daweb!gaos to the territories of Indigenous Peoples in the Amazon, our struggles may take different forms, but the love that moves us is deeply connected. For our people who still remember the healing that the land and plants provided, deserve to return to that land and benefit from it in this lifetime.
