Welwitschia mirabilis is a unique, ancient desert plant from the Namib Desert, known as a "living fossil" for its extreme longevity (over 1,000 years) and unusual biology, featuring only two permanent, strap-like leaves that grow continuously and fray over time. It survives by absorbing moisture from fog and deep groundwater, and is a dioecious gymnosperm (male and female cones on separate plants) that is a national symbol of Namibia.
