Save the Kunene

Save the Kunene A 950km walk by a local guide from Epupa, to save his home, the Kunene River Valley.

10/10/2023

It is with a heavy heart that we need to share the news that Koos Verwey, Epupa Falls Lodge’s owner and passionate advocate for Kaokoland, was seriously injured in a fall from his deck last week. He was evacuated to Windhoek and is being kept sedated and stable after many hours of surgery. Very sadly it seems that Koos will not be able to walk again, and it will be some time before we have a fuller picture of his rehabilitation journey.

While we wait for Koos to start his recovery, we want to reassure our loyal guests and agents that business at Epupa Lodge will continue as usual. Our amazing lodge team will keep on working their magic on the ground, and we’re busy arranging our systems so that Mariette can take over the day-to-day logistics and financial responsibilities. One thing we know we can do for Koos right now is to take care of his beloved Epupa and ensure that our guests can continue experiencing this amazing place. Thank you for all your prayers and best wishes, they are truly appreciated.

Friends of the Kunene, we have a problem.
A rather big one...

This road will cut through the heart of what we love and protect - Namibia's last true wilderness.
If you have seen the area surrounding the path they cut open to build a road, you will know that it is messy. Mountains, of which we have the most beautiful, will be cut open to make way for the road. Natural habitats will be destroyed. Our last wildlife will disappear.

Are we against development? No.
Are we against the way that our government is doing this? Yes. Not a single chief was asked permission.
And those that signed received ample numeration for their effort.

Inbox us if you can know how we can stand up against this.
And help us fight for our existence.

Owen is still in Windhoek doing interviews and meeting up with the lovely people that sponsored him on his way to Windhoek. Here he is with Shalli Ben-Elungu.
Meanwhile, Cornie found another croc today, poisoned and eaten by other crocs - who are also very likely to die.

The big questions after Owen's walk are: What Now? Where do we go from here?

And Owen is steadily making his way to Windhoek!
Whoop!
He left Okahandja this morning and hopes to reach Windhoek by tomorrow! AWESOME!!

Here is a photo from Adele saying the following:
We found Owen next to the road, about 55km before Okahandja. What a privilege. Let's help Owen to save our Kunene crocodiles. You doing a great job Owen. In the photo George and Brink handing him coke and some dried Namibian meat. 👍😃
