OKONGO GOES OFF-ROAD | The road to economic growth took an adventurous turn in Okongo yesterday as the town roared to life with the Omaludi 4x4 Adventure Experience.
Hosted by the Okongo Village Council under the theme “Agriculture and Tourism for Sustainable Economic Growth,” the event brought together adventure enthusiasts, residents, businesses and visitors to experience Okongo’s rugged terrain while showcasing its tourism, business and investment potential.
Ohangwena Governor Kadiva Hamutumwa said the initiative provides an innovative platform to complement the Omaludi Agricultural Festival by bringing together adventure, tourism, business, investment and communities.
Okongo Village Council Chief Executive Officer Jackson Muma said the first-of-its-kind iniatiave was born out of challenges.
“Okongo being well-known as a sandy area, we then thought of how best we could leverage this challenge. Thus, we decided to pair this concept to the already existing event, which is Omaludi. We want to bring business, investment, excitement to Okongo and ensure that it becomes one of the best urban centres that attract people from different socio-economic backgrounds,” highlighted Muma.
Apart from drawing crowds and creating a vibrant atmosphere, the event also gave local informal traders a welcome boost, with increased visitor numbers driving demand for refreshments, food and other goods.
The day’s adventure concluded at Ombutu Camp, where participants gathered for a picnic and networking session.
From farming fields to rugged terrain, Okongo is a testament that there is more than one road to economic development.
