As July comes to an end, so does our 4-week program for and .r.i.n.c.h.e.r.r.y 🌊

When they arrived, neither of them had dive qualifications. A few weeks later, they’re heading home as Advanced Open Water Divers, with some great dives, plenty of new field skills, and a few unforgettable wildlife encounters along the way 🌞🤿

It’s been a pleasure having you as part of the MAR team. Thanks for all your hard work 💪🏼 we’re looking forward to seeing where the marine science world takes you next🧬

A familiar face on the Rio Sainas wreck! ⛴️

This female loggerhead has already been spotted four times this year, usually busy grazing on the benthic life growing across the wreck 🍽️

How do we know it’s the same turtle? 📸 Photo ID!

The pattern of scales (scutes) on a turtle’s face is unique to each individual, allowing us to identify returning turtles without disturbing them. Underwater, we also use markings and barnacles on the carapace as extra clues. Although, barnacles aren’t permanent, they can be really helpful when combined with facial scute patterns!

Every sighting helps us learn more about habitat use, feeding behaviour and whether turtles return to the same sites over time. Long-term photo ID data is a simple but powerful tool for understanding and protecting these incredible animals 💙🐢

Ocean safari yesterday giving us all the magical whale encounters 🐋✨

We collected so many humpback fluke IDs and saw incredible surface action. We even witnessed mum and calf pairs swimming right underneath our boat!

A massive thank you to our friends at Globice Réunion and the MYSTRAL project for donating such an amazing camera. Having this helps us capture better photos of whale flukes 📸

We can’t wait to upload these new IDs to Happywhale 🐋

Did you know every humpback tail is as unique as a human fingerprint? Every photo submitted helps scientists learn where these gentle giants visit on their migration 🌍💙

There’s something about diving with manta rays😍

Maybe it’s the way they appear out of the blue (green if you know Zavora🤭) effortlessly gliding over the reef. Maybe it’s because every encounter feels completely on their terms. Whatever it is, it’s the reason so many of us keep coming back!

Our reefs are home to several manta cleaning stations > Places where reef fish remove parasites and dead skin. These are essential “spa stops” 🫧🧼

In Zavora, we believe the best manta encounters happen when we remember one simple thing: we’re visitors.

That means giving mantas the space to do what they came here to do. Stay low, stay calm, keep clear of the cleaning stations, and never touch them!!!! Good buoyancy, slow movements and a little patience often lead to the most incredible encounters 🌟

The truth is, the mantas don’t owe us anything. If one chooses to swim closer or circle back for another pass, that’s a moment to appreciate 💙

Every respectful interaction helps keep Zavora a place where wild manta encounters can continue for years to come.

Manta bellies!! 🤍

Did you know every manta ray has a unique spot pattern on their belly? Just like a fingerprint, these markings allow us to identify individuals and follow their stories over time. Where they travel, who they meet, and how populations change.

All of our manta data contributes to the broader dataset which has over 1,600 individuals identified in Mozambique, including 700+ from Zavora! 🌊🥞

Every photo helps us better understand these incredible animals and build the knowledge needed to protect them.

🥔 Potato Bass/Grouper 🐟

One of our reef’s top predators, an important indicator of a healthy ecosystem! Also a divers best/worst friend 😅

During our predatory fish surveys, interns learn how to estimate fish size and abundance underwater—essential skills for monitoring reef health and supporting our long term data sets for marine conservation. 🌊💙

Making friends in the Rockpool 🐙

Our first coral survey of the year had some serious interest from this cephalopod! After laying out the transect tape, our first set of quadrats were inspected accordingly 🪸🔍

aka the day octopus, master of disguise! Known for their exceptional camouflage skills, they are able to change colour and texture to mimic nearby corals or rocks
