Lady Bridget Plowden was a British educational reformer leading the Central Advisory Council for Education’s inquiry into primary schooling in England, which produced the influential Plowden Report in 1967.

Core philosophy: Child-centred education - learning should be tailored to the needs, abilities, and interests of each child.

Advocated:

✅️Smaller class sizes.
✅️Closer links between schools and parents.
✅️More emphasis on play, exploration, and creativity in early years.
✅️Stronger support for children from disadvantaged backgrounds.

The Plowden Report shifted thinking in British primary schools toward discovery-based learning rather than rote memorisation.

It inspired open-plan classrooms and more flexible timetables in the 1970s and 80s. And its child-first ethos still influences teacher training today.
