It all began here at Nhenda Camp — the birthplace of Cabassa Safaris. Over the years, the company has grown to operate across Southern Africa, known for its commitment to ethical, legal, free-roaming, fair chase hunting.

Our story began in 1994, when Johan Van Zyl founded Gnu Safaris. In 2010, his son Hardus expanded the family business into Mozambique, and Cabassa Safaris was born. Johan recalls the early challenges of running a safari company with minimal resources — but through determination and resilience, a successful operation emerged. Those same values of hard work and dedication have been passed on to Hardus, and the family legacy continues to thrive today.

We offer a wide range of hunting experiences, including Big 5, Dangerous Game, Plains Game, the Tiny 10, Wing Shooting, and Night Hunting. Spanning 10,000,000 acres of free-roaming hunting land across Mozambique, Botswana, and Namibia, we provide access to over 70 species and the expertise to help you secure your dream trophies. Our hunting areas rank among the best in Africa, and sharing the pursuit of big game with our clients is a privilege we don't take lightly.

Cabassa Safaris manages five large hunting concessions across Mozambique: two in Tete Province along the southern and northern banks of Cahora Bassa Lake, two in Niassa Province, and one bordering Zimbabwe's renowned Gonarezhou National Park to the south.

Our home base lodge sits in South Africa's Free State Province, surrounded by private hunting farms and top-class government reserves. Beyond this, our portfolio extends into Namibia, Botswana, and Zambia — offering safari experiences not to be missed.

In Botswana, Cabassa holds access to numerous big game concessions, with a primary focus on elephant hunting. These areas boast healthy elephant populations throughout, giving hunters a strong range of choices. We also have access to a 250,000-acre ranch, home to one of the largest free-roaming kudu populations in the region.

Great hunt with the Boys from Kentucky!

First started in Nhenda where we got some crocs and hippos. Then a quick hop to Vilanculos for some deepsea fishing and finally finnished on a High note in our camp in the Freestate!

Always great to have Patrick, Kelley and Timmy back and was great to host Daniel for his first trip.
