FLOODS IN MOZAMBIQUE: DEVASTATING IMPACT ON AGRICULTURE AND LIVESTOCK THREATENS FOOD SECURITY

The current flood situation in Mozambique reveals a humanitarian and economic crisis of vast proportions. Official data confirms that the impact goes beyond infrastructure destruction, directly hitting the livelihoods and survival of Mozambican families.

THE IMPACT IN NUMBERS:
- Agriculture: Over 186,735 hectares of agricultural production are flooded, with severe losses in the provinces of Gaza, Maputo, Inhambane, and Sofala.
- Livestock: More than 150,000 head of livestock have been lost, stripping thousands of farmers of their primary source of income and food.
- Public Health: Increased cases of malaria and acute diarrhea are being reported in accommodation centers, requiring urgent epidemiological monitoring.
- Human Toll: Since October, 124 lives have been lost and over 723,000 people have been affected nationwide.

OUR COMMITMENT:
At FLOOD RELIEF & HOPE FOUNDATION, our cause is to fight hunger and poverty exacerbated by these climate disasters. The massive loss of crops and livestock represents an immediate risk of severe food insecurity.
Guided by our vision that no family should be left behind, we prioritize:
Immediate food assistance for families who lost their harvest.
Protecting dignity through direct support in affected areas.
Creating paths for recovery, focusing on community rehabilitation and sustainable income programs.
Access to food, shelter, and dignity is a right we will tirelessly defend.

MOZAMBIQUE: WE ARE NOT YET CHAMPIONS IN DISASTER MANAGEMENT

The current rainy and cyclonic season, which Mozambique has been experiencing since the first week of this month, has once again highlighted the gaps in the country's disaster risk management strategy. Despite ongoing efforts, the inefficiency in responding to these cyclical events demonstrates that there is still a long way to go to ensure the safety of our populations.
The recurring human and material losses underscore the urgent need for a profound review of mitigation policies and operational response capacity. At the FLOOD RELIEF & HOPE FOUNDATION, we believe that disaster management cannot be merely reactive; it must be structural, preventive, and centered on protecting human dignity.
It is imperative to strengthen our institutions and strategies so that the country ceases to be vulnerable to its own geography and climate.

MOZAMBIQUE: CYCLONES AND FLOODS HAVE KILLED NEARLY THREE THOUSAND PEOPLE OVER THE LAST FIVE DECADES

The National Institute for Disaster Risk Management (INGD) recently released alarming data regarding the impact of extreme weather events in Mozambique. Over the last five decades, the country has recorded 2,942 deaths and a total of 11,050,533 people affected by cyclones and floods.
Statistical analysis reveals a worrying increase in the severity and frequency of these phenomena. While in the past Mozambique recorded an average of five cyclones per decade, in the last four years alone, the country has been hit by nine cyclones.

History of Human and Economic Impact:
- Cyclone Idai (2019): The deadliest in recent history, with 603 deaths.
- Cyclones Freddy and Gombe: Accounted for 234 deaths between 2021 and 2023.
- 2000 Floods: Severely affected the southern and central regions of the country, resulting in 699 fatalities.
- Impact on GDP: Between 1997 and 2022, these events caused reductions of up to 7.3% in the national Gross Domestic Product.

World Bank projections indicate that by 2050, poverty levels in Mozambique could increase by 5% due to climate change, affecting an additional 1.6 million individuals.
These figures reinforce the mission of the FLOOD RELIEF & HOPE FOUNDATION. Our country's socioeconomic vulnerability demands strengthened institutions and a continuous humanitarian response to mitigate the suffering of the most exposed populations.
Preparedness and resilience are our tools to transform this landscape of devastation into hope.
