♻️ Recycling Reality Check 🚨
What really happens before recycling can even begin?
In many cities across the Global South, waste collection is done manually — by waste pickers, small teams, and trucks with no compactors. That means lower volumes, harder work, and slower processing… even as plastic waste keeps rising.
Meanwhile, recycling trucks in high-income countries can carry up to 12 tonnes.
In Maputo? Often 600–700 kg per trip.
That’s the real gap. 🌍⚠️
Yet waste pickers keep the system moving — collecting, sorting, and keeping plastic out of the environment every day. 💚
It’s time to support stronger collection systems, fair pay, and true producer responsibility — because recycling shouldn’t fall on communities alone.
