A new approach to protecting Inhambane’s ocean🌊
Love The Oceans recently joined representatives from the government, local communities, conservation organisations, development partners, the private sector and academia for the second session of the Multi-Sectoral Platform for Sustainable and Integrated Development of the Inhambane Province.
The meeting marked the official launch of the Inhambane Seascape and the Inhambane Marine and Coastal Seascape Sustainable Management and Development Programme. An initiative focused on bringing different sectors together to support the sustainable management of the province’s marine and coastal environments. Followed by the signing of the Vilankulo Declaration ensuring a shared vision for a sustainable, inclusive, resilient and regenerative future.
The Seascape takes a broader, more connected approach to conservation, recognising that protecting biodiversity cannot be separated from the people and communities who depend on these ecosystems.
Healthy marine and coastal environments provide food, support livelihoods, contribute to sustainable tourism and help coastal communities build resilience to climate change. Ensuring these ecosystems are managed sustainably therefore benefits both people and nature.
This wider approach is particularly important as we continue working towards community-led marine protection in Jangamo Bay. By connecting local action with broader conservation efforts across the region, there is greater potential for initiatives to grow, share knowledge and create lasting impact beyond a single community or coastline.
