ALMA - Associação de Limpeza e Meio Ambiente

ALMA is a non-profit organization based in the town of Tofo, Mozambique with a focus on sustaining our natural resources through reusing and recycling.

ALMA runs several projects in order to raise awareness of the increasing waste in the area and offers creative alternatives for its disposal. We help to deal with the imminent waste problems by providing infrastructures, carrying out beach and street clean-ups, as well as organizing dump sites and making them safe for workers. In addition, we implement recycling systems and offer educational train

ing that enables people within the community to make informed decisions about the materials they use. ALMA produces its own unique, handmade crafts using different kinds of waste materials typically found within the dumpsite - including bottle tops, plastic bottles, newspapers and capulana scraps (mozambiquan clothing material). These materials are collected and processed within out handicraft workshop.

The ALMA family has been working very hard to keep Tofo Beach and Tofinho clean over the peak season holidays. We organized a daily collection service since 24th of December. Also we are cleaning the beaches and the village every day, picking up rubbish from houses, collection points, restaurants, hotels and many more. The work has been overwhelming, but people hanging inn and doing their most!
ALMA additionally is managing the rubbish site. Loads of rubbish are coming inn from Barra and other beaches, especially over the holidays.
Sadly so far ALMA is waiting for payment from municipality for several months outstanding. We truly hope to receive our well deserved payment as soon as possible, to continue our work well...
Community contributions are also strongly needed in order to pay salaries and cover running operational costs!

To Tofo community, stakeholders, residents, Tofo lovers and whom it may concern:

ALMA - Associação de Limpeza e Meio Ambiente has been operating in Tofo since 2007, organizing the rubbish collection, cleaning of Tofo / Tofinho village and beaches, as well as organizing the rubbish dump.

Holding a contract with the Municipality of Inhambane, which covers 70% of the monthly operational costs, ALMA has managed to operate over the past years without larger private donations and, or large support from private stakeholders.

The current increase in tourism, more residents living in Tofo, more construction waste, as well as more overall rubbish production, ALMA is facing serious problems to keep the waste management service sustainable and operational. Further, the Tofo rubbish dump is completely full and rubbish is almost reaching the road.

A specialized "Cat Dozer" with chains needs to be contracted. The cost of the machinery is above 100.000 Meticais in order to bring the machinery in, push and organize the rubbish dump.

This is a severe crisis as we are about to face the high season, which will bring multitudes of the usual waste.
Only a few people / businesses have donated funds so far (15.000 Mt by seven donors so far).

ALMA is therefore asking urgently for financial support from the Tofo / Tofinho and Barra community in order to keep the service going as well as to organize the rubbish dump.

ALMA would like to ask for regular payments from stakeholders and residents in order to be sustainable and improve the overall service.

In addition, ALMA is looking for interested people who would like to get involved with the organization of the project.

ALMA would like to invite everyone to a public community meeting at Tofo Tofo restaurant on Thursday, 03rd November at 17.00 pm.

Additional information will be provided and an open discussion about the current situation and future ideas of the waste management system is scheduled.

The meeting should be in all of our interest and we look forward to many attendees.

The Agenda of the meeting will comprise the following points.

Hello!
On sunday we had a very successful morning cleanig up thr beach and roads of Tofo. We were supported be the local associations „pequenos nemos“ and “marine megafauna“. We have collected a lot of garbage around the beach and hope to start clean-ups again once a month! Thank you for your support!

Here we want to show you one of our favorite Produkts at ALMA. This are trivets made from recycled bottle caps and scraps of fabric. They are perfect to ad a little more colour to your home and to remember this beautiful place!

Every piece of rubbish counts now at ALMA! For the next month we will be sorting all waste to calculate amounts of each materials that we collect. This will help us design the most suitable model for the waste management and up cycling. Please support our staff and sort your waste!
Plastic will literally pay off. You can now sell ANY KIND of plastic at ALMA. We pay via Mpesa 6Mts/ kg. Plastic is purchased on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 12-14.
