MYBHA® Pahang attended the Official Opening Ceremony of the MAH Domestic Tourism Fair 2026 – Kuantan Edition, officiated by Yang Berhormat Puan Leong Yu Man, Pahang State Executive Councillor for Unity, Tourism & Culture, at East Coast Mall, Kuantan.

Representing MYBHA® Pahang was Deputy Chairman, En. Fadzly Md Zain, together with MYBHA® Pahang committee members.

The event brought together tourism industry leaders, stakeholders, government agencies and tourism partners in support of Malaysia’s domestic tourism sector and the success of Visit Malaysia 2026.

Business Gathering

The business gathering held was successfully conducted and achieved its intended objectives. During the session, we had the opportunity to meet with Mr. Sigit, Puan Siti Fauziah, and En. Ridhwan. Constructive discussions were held, particularly focusing on potential business opportunities within the State of Pahang.

It was noted that their operational coverage spans across Johor, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka, and Pahang, which presents broader opportunities for regional collaboration and business expansion.

The event was well attended by various Government-Linked Companies (GLCs), including ANGKASA, DPMM, KOSMA, and Invest Pahang. Their presence contributed significantly to the networking session and facilitated meaningful engagement among participants.

The event was also graced by the presence of YBhg. Dato’ Mohamad Nizar bin Dato’ Sri Mohamad Najib, EXCO for Investment, Industry, Science, Technology and Innovation of the State of Pahang. His attendance underscored the importance of the event in supporting the state’s economic and investment agenda.

Dato’ Mohamad Nizar has been actively promoting investment opportunities in Pahang to both domestic and international investors. His focus includes attracting mega projects within key sectors such as industrial development, oil and gas, as well as monitoring and supporting strategic developments in areas such as the Malaysia-China Kuantan Industrial Park (MCKIP).

Overall, the session provided valuable insights and strengthened networking ties, paving the way for potential collaborations and future business opportunities in Pahang.

The Malaysian government should encourage more Malaysians to travel locally by giving them tax relief for hotel stays, an industry group has suggested.

Malaysia Budget & Business Hotel Association (MyBHA) president Sri Ganesh Michiel said this proposed tax measure would help with the expected reduced number of overseas visitors due to the Middle East conflict.

“As global travel costs rise and geopolitical instability in West Asia/Middle East disrupts traditional overseas routes, we strongly urge the government to pivot towards domestic resilience by adding and expanding the RM1,000 tourism tax relief to include licensed and registered accommodation,” he told Malay Mail.

“We must proactively incentivise Malaysians to choose local destinations to balance the inevitable shortfall in international arrivals,” he said.

But he said this tax relief must be strictly only for regulated hotels to safeguard industry integrity and to ensure it supports businesses that contribute to Malaysia’s national economy.

“By making ‘Cuti-Cuti Malaysia’ a more financially attractive option than increasingly expensive and volatile foreign travel, we can insulate our tourism sector from external shocks and ensure the absolute success of Visit Malaysia 2026,” said Sri Ganesh, who is also Malaysian Tourism Federation president.

The crisis is also exposing longer-term structural challenges within the industry.

Malaysia Budget and Business Hotel Association president Sri Ganesh Michiel warned that longstanding issues, including regulatory gaps in short-stay accommodation, are compounding the pressure on traditional operators.

He said unregulated short-stay providers have slashed prices to as low as RM70 a night in Kuala Lumpur, undercutting budget hotels, which are already struggling with weaker demand.

“We simply cannot compete at that level without sacrificing service quality, which ultimately damages the country’s reputation,” he said.

Sri Ganesh, who is also president of the Malaysian Tourism Federation, added that the downturn in sentiment could have lasting effects.

“The positive momentum built since the pandemic has been derailed. Historically, it takes years to rebuild travel confidence,” he said, citing the 2002 Bali bombings as an example.
