The Building and Wood Workers' International (BWI) Asia Pacific has released the latest edition of The Builder, its regional newsletter, showcasing major organising gains, labour campaigns and workers' struggles across Asia-Pacific while reaffirming the labour movement's commitment to democracy, occupational safety and stronger unions.

The publication underscores BWI's belief that workers across the region face increasingly common challenges that require stronger international solidarity. Through organising, collective bargaining and coordinated advocacy, BWI said trade unions continue to secure concrete gains for workers while defending democratic rights and social justice.

The latest edition of The Builder is available through BWI Asia Pacific and serves as a regional snapshot of the campaigns, victories and challenges shaping the labour movement across Asia-Pacific during the second quarter of 2026.

This 12 August, on International Youth Day, young members of the Building and Wood Workers International (BWI) will raise their voices and fists in unity and solidarity to call for DEMOCRACY.

Democracy is more than elections. It is the right to speak, to organise, to bargain collectively, and to shape our workplaces, our societies, and our future.

Around the world, democracy is under attack. Authoritarianism is growing, trade union rights are being restricted, young people are excluded from decision-making, and workers who raise their voices are too often silenced. We condemn all the attacks on democracy and rights.

As young trade unionists, we know that democracy begins where we study, work and live. It means having a voice in our workplaces, the freedom to organise, the right to bargain collectively, and the opportunity to build societies based on equality, justice and peace.

Defending universal values in a fragmented world

“We are living through a time of war, inequality and growing injustice. But the deadliest crisis is the return of a world that serves the interests of the privileged while abandoning universal values.”

At the 114th International Labour Conference, BWI General Secretary Ambet Yuson reminded delegates that the struggle for workers’ rights is inseparable from the struggle for peace, democracy and human dignity.

In a world increasingly marked by conflict, exclusion and attacks on fundamental freedoms, freedom of association remains one of humanity’s most powerful tools for peace. When workers can organise, negotiate and be heard, societies gain mechanisms to address conflict, reduce inequalities and protect dignity.

This is why defending trade union rights matters. It is why the right to strike matters.

The labour movement was built on the belief that lasting peace can only be achieved through social justice. More than a century after the founding of the ILO, that principle remains as urgent and relevant as ever.

As technology transforms work, as climate crises intensify, and as democratic spaces come under pressure, our commitment to solidarity, human rights and universal values must remain unwavering.

Because labour rights are human rights. And because peace requires workers' voices.

Behind every hard hat, uniform, apron, or time card is a mother carrying burdens far heavier than any workload: rising prices, low wages, unsafe workplaces, work contractualisation, discrimination, and the daily struggle to balance work and care responsibilities. Yet despite these challenges, working mothers continue to organise, fight, and stand in solidarity for dignity, decent jobs, living wages, maternity protection, childcare, safe workplaces, and equal rights.

Trade unions recognise that the struggle for workers’ rights is also a struggle for women’s rights and mothers’ rights. A just workplace cannot exist while mothers are overworked, underpaid, and undervalued.

To all mothers who labour tirelessly at work and at home; your sacrifices build nations, your courage strengthens movements, and your love inspires generations.
