Selangor Maritime Gateway

Selangor Maritime Gateway SMG is a project of Transitioning an Urban Polluted River Into a New Sustainable Economy.

The big goal is to make SMG a new economic generator and game changer for the State of Selangor. A master plan was designed to spur new sustainable social and economic growth along Klang River that includes elements of river cleaning, rehabilitation, development and connectivity. Along the tagline ‘A Gateway to a Better Tomorrow’, the SMG initiative looks beyond solely cleaning the river; instead,

it is boldly looking to revive 56km of river and transform 27,960 hectares of surrounding land and islands in a sustainable manner to establish Klang River as a key economic generator in the region.

April Water Quality Index (WQI) readings at Teluk Menegon and Pengkalan Batu continued to reflect a similar trend as the previous month, with the river remaining predominantly in Class IV condition throughout most of the month.

Meanwhile, our monitoring station at Sungai Nibong recorded an improvement in water quality, with 73% of readings classified under Class III and 27% under Class IV. This indicates slightly better river conditions compared to the other monitoring stations.

The conditions recorded across these stations are commonly associated with low dissolved oxygen levels, high organic pollution loads and elevated ammoniacal nitrogen concentrations, often linked to industrial, commercial and residential activities within urban river catchments.

Continuous monitoring, responsible waste management and collective community action remain essential in restoring the health of the Klang River for future generations.

Today, LLSB in collaboration with Hikers Climber Adventure Teams welcomed 30 participants from Bank Negara Malaysia Volunteers for our Riverbank Clean Up and River Educational Trip. The programme aimed to provide participants with a closer look at LLSB’s ongoing river rehabilitation initiatives while raising awareness on the importance of protecting our rivers for future generations.

The activity began with a riverbank clean-up around Sungai Sireh, where volunteers worked together to collect waste and help create a cleaner river environment. Their participation reflects the importance of collective action and community involvement in protecting our waterways.

Following the clean-up session, the educational trip gave volunteers the opportunity to better understand the challenges faced in maintaining the cleanliness and sustainability of the Klang River ecosystem.

LLSB would like to thank Bank Negara Malaysia and all volunteers for their support and commitment towards environmental conservation. Together, we can continue building greater awareness and create a more sustainable future for our rivers.

LLSB recently organised a Basic Occupational First Aid, CPR & AED Training Programme conducted by CERT Academy to improve emergency response skills and safety awareness among employees. Also present the two-day training were our collaborators including Pusaka Runding Sdn Bhd, River Care Associate Sdn Bhd and Perunding Ukur Bahan RB Sdn Bhd.

Participants took part in practical sessions and mock drills to help them understand how to react in real-life situations. The training covered important topics such as CPR, choking response, treating wounds, burns, fractures and proper patient handling techniques.

LLSB remains committed to create a safer and more prepared workplace by continuously providing useful training programmes for employees. Initiatives like this help equip staff with valuable life-saving knowledge that can make a difference during critical situations.

On 21-22 May 2026, LLSB conducted a site visit to review the progress of riverbank strengthening works using the Schematic Precast System (SPS). The SPS marks the first installation of its kind along Klang River, located near the ongoing flood mitigation project at Seksyen 24.

Yesterday, LLSB welcomed representatives from JPS Malaysia for a visit to observe the SPS installation works, followed by another site visit at Alam Impian. Today’s session continued with representatives from JPS Selangor to provide further updates on the implementation and progress of the SPS works.

LLSB remains committed to driving sustainable and innovative solutions towards a cleaner and safer river ecosystem for the future.

Today, LLSB in collaboration with Hikers Climber Adventure Teams organized a River Educational Trip programme for WWF, welcoming 50 participants on an insightful journey along the Klang River.

Throughout the trip, participants visited several key checkpoints including Interceptor 002 & 005, Log Boom & Waste Sorting Facility at Sungai Pinang and the Water Quality Monitoring Station (WQMS) at Sungai Udang.

The programme provided an opportunity to showcase how innovative solutions and continuous conservation efforts are helping to restore and protect the Klang River ecosystem. More importantly, it served as a platform to raise awareness on the importance of collective responsibility in safeguarding our rivers for a cleaner and more sustainable future.
