Kita jaga hutan, hutan jaga kita.

This is how Sabah’s first community-managed hunting area is currently taking shape in Mukim Keramuak, Tongod.

Aligned with Section 32 of the Wildlife Conservation Enactment 1997 (Lesen Haiwan Kampung), the initiative brings together four villages; Keramuak Dalam, Kenang-Kenangan, Kuala Keramuak and Tenaga Baru through a Community Conservation Area (CCA).

In simple terms, the CCA gives communities a bigger role in monitoring the area, managing natural resources and helping deter illegal activities and encroachment.

With support from Yayasan Hasanah, Panthera Malaysia, the Sabah Wildlife Department and Sabah Forestry Department, the initiative strengthens local participation in conservation and could offer a model for similar community-led approaches in other parts of Malaysia.

A first for Sabah today. A model for community-led conservation tomorrow.

What can a piece of cloth teach us about our heritage? 🇲🇾

In Dikir Barat, the semutar is more than a headgear. From the way it is folded to how it is worn, it carries knowledge, identity and tradition passed down through generations.

Here, Mohd Sulhie bin Yusuf (Abe Yie), founder of PERSIDAYA, takes us through the art of wearing the semutar and shares some of the knowledge behind this distinctive element of Dikir Barat.

We are deeply saddened by the passing of Ibu Ngot Binti Bi, one of the few remaining custodians of Tikar Bergerang, a traditional weaving craft of the Sarawak Malay community.

Throughout her life, Ibu Ngot worked to preserve this increasingly rare tradition and pass her knowledge on to future generations.

Yayasan Hasanah, through our partner Tanoti , had the privilege of recognising her artistry at the Hasanah Gold Threads Awards. Her work received Plaiting – Best Traditional in both 2023 and 2024. In 2024, she was also also honoured with the Hasanah Gold Award for her lifelong dedication to the craft.

Her legacy lives on through the knowledge she shared, the people she taught and the weaving tradition she worked tirelessly to preserve.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to Ibu Ngot’s family, loved ones and all the communities who knew and cherished her.

May her knowledge and craft continue to be passed on for generations to come ahead.

📢 Call for Proposals: Partnership for The Development of The Perak State Solid Waste Master Plan ♻️

Yayasan Hasanah, in collaboration with the Perak State Government, is inviting qualified consultants, researchers and practitioners to develop the Perak State Solid Waste Master Plan (PISPEN) 2027–2036.

🏘️ Covering local authorities across Perak, the master plan will help shape a smarter, more coordinated and sustainable approach to household solid waste management. This includes stronger governance, better infrastructure, data-driven planning, circular economy solutions and greater community participation across the state.

💡 If you have the expertise and ideas to turn research into practical action, we want to hear from you.

What can state-linked philanthropy do differently?

At the AVPN Global Conference 2026 in New Delhi, Yayasan Hasanah’s Trustee and Managing Director, Puan Siti Kamariah Ahmad Subki, joined the panel Partnering with State-Linked Philanthropy: Unlocking New Pathways for Social Impact.

She shared reflections from Yayasan Hasanah’s experience of working alongside government, civil society, communities and the private sector to address complex social challenges.

A key takeaway from the discussion: state-linked philanthropy is not about replacing the role of government. It is about complementing public systems—bringing patient capital, trusted partnerships and the flexibility to test new approaches, strengthen ecosystems and reach communities that may otherwise be left behind.

Puan Siti Kamariah also reflected on the importance of staying close enough to national priorities to contribute meaningfully, while retaining the independence needed to listen, learn and respond to realities on the ground.

Because lasting impact is rarely achieved by one institution alone. It takes trust, collaboration and a shared commitment to turn promising solutions into progress at scale.

The session also featured Nuraini Razak, Chairwoman of Danantara Indonesia Trust, and Pippa Zainoeddin, Deputy Director of Strategy, Planning & Management at the Gates Foundation, moderated by Keeran Sivarajah, Partner at The Bridgespan Group.
