For Abiezer, the hospital and the community are not separate worlds but a seamless extension of one another.

His community work teaches him that care also requires presence. It is about offering time, listening, and a sense of reassurance in moments that can feel uncertain or overwhelming.

“Taking what I learn outside the hospital back into it has taught me not to see patients as just illnesses, but as people with lives, people who need more than medicine or surgery, but a more holistic kind of care.”

“Whenever I see a patient, I want to ensure that, despite the pain they’re going through and the days they have, they still feel there’s someone who really cares. I want to give that sense of hope to my patients.”

For him, being a doctor is not only about treating illness, but about recognising the life that surrounds it — and caring for both.

In tribute to Merdeka Month, the month of our nation's independence, we are pleased to invite you to ILMU Hasanah #50—a milestone edition of Yayasan Hasanah's knowledge-sharing series.

As ILMU Hasanah marks its 50th edition, this special session celebrates the supremacy of knowledge as the prerequisite of a liberated mind (minda merdeka). Knowledge is not only represented by academic degrees—it can be found everywhere: within communities, through lived experiences, and in the wisdom shared across generations. It is knowledge that empowers people to make better choices, improve everyday lives, and create lasting impact.

Under the theme "50 Conversations, Stories of Hope", join our trusted civil society partners as they share how listening, learning, and adapting alongside communities have shaped their work—from accountability and participation to resilience, systems thinking, and sustainable change.
