青团运成立于1975年，发源地为马六甲的地和新村，从纯朴的乡村至全国各地城镇，青团运能够走过这么遥远的光景而不衰，并且还能达至今日之规模，绝非一件容易的事。
目前，青团运在全国各地共拥有近300个活跃支会，从第一任总会长郑安泉到刘德贤，再到李绰钧硕士及陈德贤、何德君，到現在劉永達碩士。青团运在领导人更替中展现出不同的领导风格。
青团运成立于70年代的大马社会，当时因为受到全球思想意识形态斗争的左右，青年对社会现状的不满，改造社会的呼声强烈。
对抗局面引起社会动荡，唯恐长久下去对华社不利，国内的一些党团有识之士，就倡议筹组一个青年组织，不分党派和籍贯以凝聚华青力量，以另一种方式展开斗争，而这个新的组织就顾名思义命名为马来西亚青年团结运动。
从马六甲发起以来，青团运获得党团人士的鼎力支持，并采取中庸的斗争路线，与友族青年组织发展良好关系，共同参与全民社会运动。
青团运是当时一成立就获得政府承认

的青年组织，在青年及国家课题上，都受到当时的文青体育部（现称青年及体育部）的邀请对课题发表看法及意见，青团运顿时也成为青年的喉舌。
另外，青团运也不间断地每年受到青年及体育部邀请派出合格会员参与国际青年交换计划，与海外青年做直接的交流。目前，青团运是马来西亚青年理事会的成员之一。
虽然青团运在80年代末遭受合作社风暴的影响及打击，但是很快的就站了起来，继续扮演青年先锋的角色，而且比以前更茁壮强大
