Laut) children who are in Pulau Omadal, Semporna, Sabah, Malaysia. They are undocumented, hence they cannot move around freely. They are subsistence fishermen. Many of them do not know Bahasa Malaysia (BM), the national language of the country they reside in. Hence, this school hopes to provide the children with basic language skill in BM, simple arithmetic and art classes. The classes will be conducted by the Bajau children who are living in the same island. If you would like to donate, please go here: https://goo.gl/CLhLYE.

ARTS & CULTURE CLASS

Yesterday, our Arts and Culture class was conducted as part of the weekly session held every Wednesday, involving 5 morning classes. This class provides students with the opportunity to explore various elements of art in a fun and engaging environment.

Among the modules included in this class are:
โœจ Visual arts (drawing & coloring)
๐ŸŽฌ Film analysis
๐ŸŽค Learning and singing songs together
๐ŸŽถ Music instrument (ukulele, xylophone & cajon)
๐ŸŽญ Acting (Drama play & theater game)

During the recent session, students were given two group tasks:

๐Ÿ–Œ๏ธ Task 1:
Each group was required to create a group name and design their own logo on mahjong paper. They then presented their work and explained the meaning behind their logo. This activity helped to build studentsโ€™ confidence and improve their communication skills.

๐Ÿซ Task 2:
Each group was asked to create their โ€œdream schoolโ€ model using clay. They were given full freedom to design and build creatively based on their imagination.

Through these activities, students were able to strengthen teamwork while enhancing their imagination and creativity. The outcomes were incredibly creative, unique, and inspiring!

Special thanks to Yayasan MySDG for sponsoring materials and equipment for our literacy programme, helping us create a more conducive learning environment.

What happens when someone needs urgent medical care, but has no IC?

Ansang, 19, suffered a serious head injury on one of the nearby islands. The wound was severe, exposing part of the skull, and without timely medical intervention his life could have been at risk.

His family brought him to Omadal Island, where a relative happens to be one of our students, hoping to find help.
On 22 February, our assistant teacher and Iskul team member, Bilkuin, began the journey to get Ansang medical treatment. They travelled from Omadal to Hospital Semporna, and were later referred to Hospital Tawau for a CT scan and surgery. Ansang remained in hospital until 6 March.

Throughout this time, Bilkuin stayed by his side. He helped him bathe, brought food, and translated between doctors and Ansang.

We are proud of Bilkuin โ€” an Iskul team member and a stateless teacher who was once our student, able to support Ansang through the entire process.
Over the past decade, we have watched him grow into a confident young adult who can navigate systems that are often out of reach for his community.
It is a quiet reminder that education does more than open opportunities โ€” it equips communities to care for one another.

Many stateless community members do not speak Malay fluently, and without someone like Bilkuin they would struggle to communicate with doctors and hospital staff during emergencies like this.

The total cost of Ansangโ€™s treatment was RM7,407. His family contributed what they could toward the medical expenses, but much of the cost was covered by our healthcare funds.

We are grateful to the staff at Hospital Semporna and Hospital Tawau who helped make Ansangโ€™s recovery possible.

For stateless communities, reaching medical care is a hurdle in itself. When emergencies happen, there is rarely a safety net.
This time, we were able to help. But situations like this happen more often than people realise โ€” and organisations like Iskul cannot carry this responsibility alone.

CORAL CLEANING & MONITORING ACTIVITY (12 FEBRUARY)

On 12 February, a coral cleaning and monitoring activity was successfully carried out by divers from the Iskul Conservation Marine Group, with support from the Larapan Marine Conservation Group.

This activity was conducted to ensure the rehabilitation sites remain in good condition, as well as to monitor the growth and survival of transplanted coral fragments.

Activity Overview
The dives were divided into two sessions:
โ€ข First session: Focused on cleaning the coral spider frame area
โ€ข Second session: Focused on cleaning the coral cookies area

Monitoring Results
From the monitoring conducted:
โ€ข A total of 16 coral fragments were replaced at the spider frame
โ€ข 3 coral cookies were found dead and 1 was bleached after falling from the table
โ€ข The remaining coral fragments were alive and in stable condition

Field Challenges
Some coral fragments on the spider frame died due to:
โ€ข Loose bindings, causing fragments to detach
โ€ข Evidence of poison fishing activity, which negatively impacts the coral ecosystem

Conclusion
This activity is important to ensure the success of coral restoration efforts. Continuous monitoring and proper installation techniques are essential to improve coral survival rates.

The collaboration between dive groups reflects a strong commitment to protecting and restoring our marine ecosystems.

On 7 to 8 February, Iskul Sama DiLaut Omadal organised a meaningful Paralegal Workshop at Seafest Hotel, attended by our teachers, vocational students, two Omadal community representatives, and five participants from . We were grateful to have as our trainer.

During the workshop, we learned about childrenโ€™s rights under the Convention on the Rights of the Child CRC, especially every childโ€™s right to be registered at birth, have a name, and have a nationality. We were also introduced to the three types of birth registration in Sabah, namely normal birth registration, late birth registration, and delayed birth registration, along with the steps and required documents.

Through interactive roleplay sessions, participants acted out real life scenarios, making the learning practical and engaging. After the workshop, many students shared that they felt excited and empowered, realising that the challenges they face have solutions. They now feel more confident, informed, and hopeful about securing their rights.

Thank you to ANAK for guiding us, Borneo Komrad for learning alongside us, and and the Ministry of Finance for supporting this workshop.

No Rain, No Water

Living on an island may look beautiful from the outside, but our daily reality is not easy. We live without access to water pipes, and every single day our lives depend on the sky above us.

Rainwater is our only source of water. When it rains, we collect and save every drop for drinking, cooking, washing, and bathing. But when the rain does not come for a long time, fear quietly grows. Our tanks run low, and clean water becomes a daily worry.

When there is no rain, we have no choice but to buy water. It must be transported from another island or from Semporna town using a boat, at a cost that is very expensive for us. Clean water, something many take for granted, becomes a heavy burden.

Here, life is simple and harsh: no rain, no water.
