Saturday is beach clean day… but when we have volunteers, it’s also marine debris day! 🌊🗑️

This week, our one volunteer joined two members of the SEAS team for two marine debris dives, removing an incredible 25 kg of trash from the reef! 💪

Back on land, we headed out for our regular beach clean, collecting another 1.6 kg of rubbish from the beach.

And we don’t just collect it — we also want to know what we’re finding and where it’s coming from. One of the bags collected underwater was sorted and analysed using Brand Audit, helping us build a better picture of the types and sources of plastic waste ending up in our waters.

Two dives, a beach clean, 26.6 kg of rubbish removed, and valuable data collected. Not a bad Saturday! 💙

Coral reefs are incredibly important — and incredibly sensitive to changes in ocean temperature 🌡️🌊
When the sea gets too warm, corals can become stressed and expel the tiny algae that provide them with much of their colour and energy. This causes coral bleaching.
Bleaching is a warning sign, but it doesn’t always mean the coral is dead. If conditions improve, some corals can recover.
Here in Mabul, our reefs are part of the community, the ecosystem and the local economy. Looking after them doesn’t stop climate change — but it does help keep reefs healthier and more resilient in the face of change.

Marine Education for Majestic Staff

We regularly hold marine conservation education sessions for the Majestic team, covering sea turtles, coral reefs, and responsible wildlife interactions.

We also occasionally welcome our young guests to join fun marine education activities. Through simple learning sessions and marine animal coloring, children get to know the amazing marine life of Derawan and learn why it’s important to protect our oceans from an early age. Kami rutin mengadakan sesi edukasi konservasi laut bagi staf Majestic tentang penyu, terumbu karang, dan cara berinteraksi dengan satwa laut secara bertanggung jawab.

Sesekali, kami juga mengajak tamu anak-anak di Majestic untuk belajar mengenal kehidupan laut melalui kegiatan mewarnai hewan laut. Dengan cara yang menyenangkan, mereka belajar mengenal satwa laut sekaligus pentingnya menjaga laut sejak usia dini.

Printing Mabul’s Beauty on Postcards💌

Dear Diary,

on 16th of July, we learnt turmeric sun printing to decorate our postcards. Like always, our class first started with breakfast bought from local vendor. We packed our breakfast in our personal lunchbox!🍱

We all so excited to decorate our postcards using flowers found around Mabul! Our homework was to write the postcards to Mabul, our home💗

Marine Biology Briefing for Scuba Ju**ie Sangalaki Guests
Every dive is an opportunity to discover the incredible marine life of the Derawan Islands—and understanding these animals is the first step toward protecting them.

Before entering the water, we provides a marine biology briefing for Scuba Ju**ie Sangalaki’s guests, introducing iconic species they may encounter, including manta rays, sea turtles, leopard sharks, and baby guitar shark. Guests learn about each species’ behaviour, habitat, feeding habits, and the important role they play in maintaining healthy marine ecosystems.

The briefing also promotes responsible wildlife interactions by encouraging divers and snorkelers to maintain good buoyancy, avoid touching marine life or coral reefs, and observe wildlife from a respectful distance.

Edukasi Satwa Laut untuk Tamu Scuba Ju**ie Sangalaki

Setiap penyelaman adalah kesempatan untuk mengenal keajaiban bawah laut Kepulauan Derawan—dan memahami satwa laut merupakan langkah awal untuk ikut melindunginya.

Sebelum memasuki air, kami memberikan sesi edukasi biologi laut kepada tamu Scuba Ju**ie Sangalaki. Dalam sesi ini, para tamu diperkenalkan dengan berbagai satwa ikonik yang berpotensi dijumpai, seperti pari manta, penyu, hiu tutul (leopard shark), dan pari pendong (guitar shark). Mereka juga diajak mengenal perilaku, habitat, pola makan, serta peran penting setiap spesies dalam menjaga keseimbangan ekosistem laut.

Briefing ini juga mengajak para tamu untuk berinteraksi dengan satwa liar secara bertanggung jawab, seperti menjaga daya apung saat menyelam, tidak menyentuh satwa maupun terumbu karang, serta mengamati satwa dari jarak yang aman.

🌊 Another beach clean, another reminder that every pair of hands makes a difference.

Our volunteers helped collect rubbish from the beach and log their finds on the Clean Swell app, while children from the local community joined us to collect one of the most common types of litter we find: cigarette butts.

Small pieces of rubbish can still have a big impact, so every one collected matters. 💙♻️

One question we’ve been asked is why SEAS won’t simply replicate everything we do on Mabul at our Sangalaki branch.

The answer is simple: conservation isn’t one-size-fits-all.

Every island has different people, priorities and challenges. What works in one place may not work in another.

On Mabul, our work focuses on turtle rehabilitation, reef restoration, plastic recovery and community outreach.

In Sangalaki, our focus will be different. We’ll be working with resorts, shops and tourism operators to reduce their environmental impact, while building outreach and environmental awareness within the local community.

The mission is the same.

The approach is different.

Because good conservation means finding the solutions that work best for each place and the people who call it home. 💙
