From jazz music to turtle conservation. 🎷🐢

On 3 September, we were happy to welcome Mezzotono from Italy to Walai Penyu Conservation Park, as part of Sepilok Jazz 5th Edition 2026 Sepilok Jazz

During their visit, they learned about the turtle conservation work by Friends Of Sea Turtles Education & Research, FOSTER , visited the hatchery, joined a baby turtle release, and spent time with the Libaran community through mat weaving and Congkak.

We’re happy to share a small part of Libaran with our visitors, and grateful for everyone who continues to support conservation and community tourism here.

Pada 3 September, kami berkesempatan menerima kunjungan Mezzotono dari Itali sempena Sepilok Jazz Edisi ke-5 2026. 🇮🇹🎤

Sepanjang di sini, mereka sempat mengenali usaha pemuliharaan penyu , melawat hatchery dan turut bersama dalam aktiviti pelepasan anak penyu. Mereka juga sempat bergaul dengan komuniti kampung, belajar menganyam tikar dan bermain Congkak bersama penduduk.

Seronok dapat kongsi sedikit kehidupan di Libaran, dari penyu, alam semula jadi sampai ke kehidupan komuniti kampung.

It’s not just for the vibes (though it is kinda magical ngl). There’s actually a super important reason.

You see, hatchlings naturally follow the brightest light — usually the moonlight reflecting off the ocean. It’s how they know where the sea is. But when there’s artificial light (like flash, torchlight, phone screen), they get confused and go the wrong way — away from the sea, and straight into danger.

Red light = less stress for the hatchlings = higher survival chances

Watching them wiggle their way to the sea under the stars… trust me, it's something you won’t forget. It’s cute, but it’s also powerful. You're literally witnessing nature’s fight to survive — and helping it win.

So here's a question for you:

If you've been wondering why our campsite looks a little different, here's the story behind it.

Years ago, this site was operated by another company. When they stopped operating, the place was left behind.

Instead of starting from scratch, we asked ourselves a simple question.

What can we save?

The wooden structures had already decayed, but the concrete foundations were still strong. So rather than demolishing everything, we gave the site a new purpose.

Today, those same foundations have become our campsite. Large safari tents, proper beds, electricity, and fans provide a comfortable stay, while keeping the footprint on the island as small as possible.

It's not about building something brand new.

It's about respecting what was already here, reducing unnecessary waste, and proving that conservation sometimes begins by making better use of what already exists.

Every corner of Walai Penyu Conservation Park has a story, and this campsite is one of them. 🐢

Orang selalu tanya, “Apa kepentingan penyu?” 🐢
Bayangkan lautan seperti satu sistem gergasi di mana semuanya bergantung antara satu sama lain. Malah spesies terkecil pun memainkan peranan, termasuk kita manusia
Penyu laut membantu mengekalkan kesihatan rumpai laut dengan memakan dan memangkasnya secara semula jadi. Kedengarannya mudah, bukan?
Tetapi rumpai laut yang sihat bermakna mikroorganisma boleh berkembang maju. Kemudian ikan yang lebih kecil makan di sana. Kemudian ikan yang lebih besar datang selepas itu. Semuanya saling berkaitan.
Tanpa keseimbangan, ekosistem perlahan-lahan berubah. Itulah sebabnya melindungi penyu bukan sekadar menyelamatkan satu spesies. Ia adalah tentang melindungi lautan itu sendiri. 💙
Dan sejujurnya, melihat usaha pemuliharaan dari dekat di pulau kecil seperti Libaran membuatkan anda melihat alam semula jadi dengan sangat berbeza.

People always ask, “Why do sea turtles matter so much?” 🐢

Well… imagine the ocean like one giant system where everything depends on each other. Even the smallest species has a role to play, including us humans.

Sea turtles help keep seagrass healthy by eating and trimming it naturally. Sounds simple, right? But healthy seagrass means microorganisms can thrive. Then smaller fish feed there. Then bigger fish come after that. It’s all connected.

Without balance, the ecosystem slowly changes. That’s why protecting turtles is not just about saving one species. It’s about protecting the ocean itself. 💙

And honestly, seeing conservation efforts up close on a small island like Libaran makes you look at nature very differently.
