On World Wetlands Day, we highlight the Lower Kinabatangan Segama Wetlands in Eastern Sabah as a key site for migratory bird monitoring. The surveys Hutan conducts here contribute to a clearer understanding of how migratory birds use wetland habitats across seasons and locations.

Travelling by boat from Sukau Village to Kulamba Field Centre, the Wildlife Survey and Protection (WSP) unit carried out field monitoring in this Ramsar site to identify migratory bird species and compare sightings between two villages, Kg. Tundun Bohangin and Kg. Mumiang.

Monitoring was conducted for a few days in 2024 and 2025 during the migratory season from October to March. In 2024, we recorded 31 bird species, including 21 migratory species. In 2025, 17 species were observed.

Kg. Mumiang recorded more migratory birds, likely due to the presence of a sand island that provides an important resting and feeding area.

Stay tuned for an upcoming post featuring bird photographs captured by the WSP unit!

2026 begins with our Annual General Meeting (13–17 Jan). After navigating last year’s AGM during severe flooding, it was meaningful to gather in person again to reflect on the work and progress made across all units in 2025.

Thank you to everyone who joined us, especially our partners , , , and for sharing their inspiring work! We also captured new portraits of each unit during the week, and celebrated 30 years 🎂 since the founding of Hutan on 15 January, marking its establishment in 1996.

Looking forward to the year ahead and the work to be done together! 💚

2025 has been a year of action, learning, and impact, combining decades of field experience and hands-on conservation with innovative technologies. The teams carried out groundbreaking orangutan surveys, advanced wildlife monitoring, human-wildlife conflict mitigation, and reforestation, while continuously engaging with local communities. Along the way, we also achieved important milestones, including recognition for the Kinabatangan as a Biosphere Reserve and contributions to scientific research and knowledge sharing.

Let’s look back on what Hutan’s fantastic teams have achieved over the year both across the state of Sabah (Malaysian Borneo) and in the Kinabatangan landscape.

The new IUCN guidelines on wild-to-wild orangutan translocations explore when orangutans could be removed from their natural habitat. Could translocating orangutans create more problems than trying to find ways to coexist with them where they are found, even when they are living outside forest habitat?

Critically Endangered orangutans are highly threatened by habitat loss, alteration and fragmentation of their habitat, and poaching. As the human footprint expands further into orangutan habitat, human-orangutan conflict becomes a more frequent occurrence, and the question of when or if to transloca...

Big news from the 37th Session of the International Coordinating Council (ICC) of the Man and the Biosphere Programme (MAB) in Hangzhou, China: Kinabatangan is now officially one of 26 new UNESCO Biosphere Reserves announced on 27 Sept 2025!

A globally renowned biodiversity hotspot of outstanding conservation value, Kinabatangan is also home to the rich heritage of the Orang Sungai, whose traditional knowledge and practices have long been intertwined with the rhythms of the river.

The nomination process was led by Sabah Biodiversity Centre (SaBC) and we were honoured to be entrusted by the Sabah Government, through , to implement the project.
