CENTHRA is a community of human rights defenders consisting of researchers, activists, supporters and donors committed to promoting human rights, dignity, quality of life and sustainability in Malaysia and around the world through multidimensional human rights research and advocacy programmes. We strive to meet our goals through participatory research, deliberative dialogue, educational outreach,

public debate, grass-root engagement and policy consultation with various groups of human rights stakeholders at the local, national, regional and international levels. CENTHRA aims to contribute an active role in shaping the 21st century human rights understanding and practice as well as in encountering the contemporary human rights challenges by embarking on advanced and critical research and advocacy programmes in the different areas of human rights issues. We make our work available on-line, in electronic formats and in prints such as reports, monographs, books and pamphlets. We intend to make our works accessible not only to the human rights specialists but also to the public at large.

Since October 2023, hundreds of journalists and media workers have been targeted through arrest, torture, censorship, and lethal force. Many are held without charge or trial. Others were killed while wearing PRESS vests, reporting beside hospitals, and documenting civilian suffering. Their families have also paid the price.

On 31 January Global Solidarity Day for Palestinians Deteinees, we join the Red Ribbon campaign to demand the immediate release of all illegally detained Palestinian journalists, protection for journalists and their families, an end to the targeting of truth-tellers, full restoration of communication networks and accountability for war crimes.

Journalism is not a crime.
Witnesses must not be buried.
Don’t forget them.

Palestinian women and girls are being detained without charge, threatened with sexual violence, separated from their babies, and subjected to humiliation and tortureβ€”documented by the UN, Amnesty International, and multiple human rights organizations.

Over 650 women and girls have been arrested since October 2023.

This is not collateral damage.
It is systematic violence against women.

πŸ“ 31 January β€” Global Solidarity Day
We raise a red ribbon for Palestinian detainees and demand protection for women living under occupation.

Don’t forget the women of Palestine.
Amplify their voices.

We have joined the Palestinian-led Red Ribbon Campaign to demand freedom for Palestinians imprisoned under israeli occupation. Based on documentation from prisoners’ rights and the israeli Prison Service, this is mass detention: around 9300 prisoners, 3350 held without charge or trial, around 350 children, 51 women and 1220 labelled β€œunlawful combatants”.

Add the red ribbon to your profile, share this carousel, and speak about Palestinian prisoners. Visibility is resistance.

Palestinians want justice, not solidarity built on betrayal | New Straits Times

EACH year on Nov 29, the United Nations observes the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People. At first glance, it appears noble β€” a moment to affirm the inalienable rights of a dispossessed nation.

This talk examines the ideological evolution of Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), one of Syria's most significant armed factions, which emerged from al-Qaeda's Syrian affiliate but has undergone remarkable transformation in recent years.

Drawing on fieldwork and analysis of primary sources, Professor Hellyer explores how HTS has navigated the tension between its Salafi-jihadi origins and the pragmatic demands of governance in northwest Syria.

The presentation addresses critical questions about religious authority, political legitimacy, and whether militant organizations can genuinely moderate their ideologyβ€”or whether such transformations are merely tactical adaptations.

For audiences in Malaysia and beyond, this case study offers important insights into contemporary debates about Islamic governance, the relationship between religious ideology and political power, and the challenges facing Muslim-majority societies emerging from conflict.

The discussion will also consider broader implications for understanding how religious movements evolve under pressure, and what this means for post-conflict reconstruction and reconciliation in the Muslim world.

PETITION: We stand with the ICC β€” Investigate war crimes in Palestine without fear or favour.
Power must never be above the law. Justice for the Palestinian people demands courage, not silence.

We call on the ICC to act independently and uphold universal justice.
No intimidation. No delay. No impunity.

Sign and share β€” justice will not be silenced.

The UN Special Rapporteur’s latest report β€” A/80/492: β€œGaza Genocide: A Collective Crime” β€” declares that what is unfolding in Gaza is not a tragedy of war, but a collective crime sustained by the complicity of powerful Third States.

As Malaysia continues to champion justice and accountability for Palestine, this report offers both a moral and legal reminder: silence is complicity.

Justice Initiative for Victims of Genocide and Support for the International Criminal Court

We, the undersigned lawyers and legal professionals, declare our full support for justice for the victims of genocide in Palestine and our unwavering endorsement of the International Criminal Court (ICC) and its independence, in the face of all forms of pressure and sanctions targeting the Court or its Prosecutor.
Driven by our professional and ethical responsibility to uphold human dignity and the rule of law, we refuse to remain silent in the face of genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity committed against the Palestinian people in Gaza and the West Bank. We therefore call for the following:

1- To enable the International Criminal Court to carry out its mandate freely and without any political interference.

2- To lift all sanctions imposed on the Court or its Prosecutor.

3- To expedite the issuance of arrest warrants for all political and military officials responsible for committing these crimes.

4- To ensure the unhindered and unconditional delivery of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip.

International justice is not a political optionβ€”it is a humanitarian and moral obligation. Standing together as lawyers and legal professionals from across the globe is an expression of our solidarity with the victims and our commitment to the principle of accountability and the fight against impunity.

Accordingly, we call on our colleagues around the world to join us. We affirm that our gathering will take place at the International Criminal Court in The Hague on Friday, October 24, 2025, at 3:00 PM (The Hague local time). We also encourage our fellow lawyers and legal professionals in other countries to hold simultaneous (or near-simultaneous) gatherings in front of judicial and bar institutions in their respective countries.

Note: The signed petition will be submitted to the International Criminal Court in affirmation of the above demands.

Day 2 of the South East Asia Young Lawyers Training Series #1 β€” International Law, Human Rights and the Palestinian Cause.

An illuminating session by Ms. Shabnam Mohammed, International Lawyer, on β€œThe Legal Framework: The ICC Palestine Investigation.”

Her insights reminded us that justice is not only a matter of law, but of courage β€” and that the rule of law finds its true purpose when it gives voice to the silenced.
