Our final stopover for lunch was at Ray of Hope Café in Bercham, Ipoh.

Every dish served at Ray of Hope Café is more than just delicious food — it represents an opportunity to empower young adults with autism, down syndrome, and other learning disabilities.

The café is more than a place to dine; it is a place of learning, growth, and inclusion. Young adults take on roles as waiters and waitresses, gaining valuable real-world experience, building confidence, and developing social and employment skills through interactions with customers.

Behind the scenes, they receive hands-on training in the bakery and café operations, equipping them with practical skills for greater independence and future employment opportunities.

Ray of Hope Café offers a wide variety of local and Western favourites, all prepared and served with pride and purpose. If you're ever in Ipoh, be sure to stop by and enjoy a meal at this wonderful café

Thank you, Pastor Soon, for your time and warm hospitality in speaking with us and sharing the inspiring story of how Ray of Hope was started.

The programme also includes weekly classes focusing on social communication and functional living skills, incorporating the Social Thinking curriculum to build a strong foundation for greater independence and community participation.

Our visitations continued today with stops at two inspiring centres.

We first visited PPDK AnIPS @ PeSTeC in Arau, a community-based rehabilitation and special education centre that provides therapies, vocational training, and daily support for persons with disabilities.

Their vocational activities include vegetable farming, dried jelly production, and mango juice processing, creating meaningful opportunities for skills development.

We also visited Kiddie Care Therapy Centre in Jitra, founded by Nadia and her co-founder, Najihah. The centre supports children and young people aged 6 months to 19 years with autism, ADHD, speech delays, and other developmental challenges. Through therapy, intervention, and family support, they help build essential life skills, confidence, and independence.

These visits were truly eye-opening, showcasing the many innovative ways organisations are empowering persons with disabilities and their families. We were especially inspired by the strength, dedication, and leadership of the remarkable women who founded and run these centres. Their passion and commitment are making a real difference in their communities.

Our sincere thanks to Nadia, Shahanis, and Maisarah from PPDK AnIPS for your warm welcome and sharing.

And to Nur Nadia and Wan Najihah from Kiddie Care, thank you for generously sharing your knowledge and experiences with us. Thank you also for the special durian treat at Dusun Durian Tok Kalau. We truly enjoyed it.

Visitations and Training in the Northern Region

As part of our northern outreach and training activities, we had the opportunity to visit several inspiring organisations in Sungai Petani.

Our first stop was PDK Cempaka Merbok, a centre renowned for its beautiful batik printing by persons with disabilities. The visit provided valuable insights into their vocational training programmes and production processes.

We also visited Persatuan Dyslexia Malaysia, where we gained a deeper understanding of effective approaches and strategies for supporting children with dyslexia and enhancing their learning experience.

Another meaningful visit was to PDK Sungai Petani, which serves approximately 50 children. The centre places a strong emphasis on developing self-help and daily living skills. We were truly inspired by the dedication and commitment of the teachers and staff in nurturing the children under their care.

In addition, we conducted a Self-Advocacy Workshop for Pekaka Bakery Workshop members, empowering participants to understand their rights, build self-confidence, speak up for themselves, and make informed decisions. Thank you also for the yummy baked goods. We truly appreciate your thoughtful gesture.

A special thank you to Kak Liza, Encik Azrul, Encik Shibly, Encik Faizul and Madam Juliana for warmly welcoming us and sharing your knowledge and experiences.

It is encouraging to see so many individuals and organisations working tirelessly to support the PWLD community.

We are grateful for the opportunity to learn from their journeys, hear their stories, and exchange ideas as we continue our shared mission of inclusion and empowerment.

Today, our members took part in a pilot workshop on Basic Financial Management and Budgeting led by Prof. Dr. Anna and Dr. Faizanah from University of Malaya.

The session introduced simple and practical ways to manage money, understand spending, and plan a budget. Through an interactive app, members learned the importance of making informed financial decisions and developing good money habits for greater independence.

We are excited to be part of this pilot initiative and look forward to seeing how these valuable skills can empower our members to take greater control of their financial future.

Day 2 of UV's Committee Training Retreat
Stepping Into My Role

Today was about finding our voice, understanding our responsibilities, and growing together as a team. Through sharing, learning, and supporting one another, our committee members gained confidence in stepping into their leadership roles.

Every leader has a story. Every voice matters. Together, we are building a stronger and more inclusive future for persons with learning disabilities.

A special thanks to our volunteer Keat Lim for facilitating our sessions.

Committee Training Retreat: Learning, Bonding & Growing Together

Day 1 of a 2 days committee training retreat for our committee members — to learn, bonding, and strengthen our team.

The retreat provided our committee to get to know one another better, share their thoughts and experiences, and learn how to confidently use their voice as self-advocates and leaders.

Alongside the learning sessions, members also enjoyed time to relax, connect, and have fun together. Through meaningful conversations, team activities, and moments of reflection, the retreat helped build stronger friendships and a deeper sense of belonging.

My Story, My Voice, My Leadership.
