Grief after su***de is often silent, complicated, and lonely — for parents, siblings, friends, colleagues, and communities.

It’s not just the loss of a loved one, but also the weight of unanswered questions, guilt, and stigma that can make the journey even harder to bear.

This thoughtful piece from Free Malaysia Today explores where we can turn in those moments of deep loss, and how support makes all the difference.

On this World Su***de Prevention Day, may we keep the conversation open, extend compassion, and remind one another: you don’t have to carry it alone. 💙

In conjunction with World Su***de Prevention Day, here's why support for survivors of su***de loss is a crucial strategy that deserves more attention.

This is what Shaun Nicholas has to say about his 10KM team relay of 4 from Pulau Lang Tengah to Pulau Redang. Congratulations to Shaun Nicholas!

"My second open water swim — and this time, a 10km cross-channel relay from Lang Tengah to Pulau Redang. The vast depths of the ocean gave me chills, and at one point, I swam right into a swarm of jellyfish.

Getting stung on my face, arms, and chest was a shock I’ll never forget. The fear of getting back into the water after that was real — but I knew I had to, and I did. Every current and every moment of doubt reminded me what it means to keep going. And today, I proved to myself — and to others — that I could do it. And I did. 💪

But this swim was never just about distance. It was about carrying forward Jo-Ee’s legacy and shining a light on mental health.

Through this journey, I’ve learned that courage is not the absence of fear, but the strength to step back in — just like those battling silent struggles every day.

To my incredible Boat 3 teammates — thank you for every cheer, every laugh, and every moment of strength we shared out there.

And to the amazing Courage in the Current committee, whose hard work and heart made this expedition possible, thank you for giving me the chance to be part of something so meaningful. Together, we didn’t just cross the sea — we carried forward a message of hope and courage.

❤️

Sharing Angelin Ching's experience from the CitC 10KM Swim Expedition on 30th August 2025.

"My third time in open water, and it was unlike anything I’ve ever done; a 10km (relay) cross-channel swim expedition from Lang Tengah to Pulau Redang on Malaysia’s National Day weekend.

Six hours under the hot sun with jellyfish around, crashing waves, and the vast, dark ocean beneath me, it was tough. For a moment, fear crept in. But that’s what made it exactly what this swim was meant to be: finding courage in the current.

To the incredible team who made this possible, my amazing Boat 3 teammates, the navigation, command, medic, support crew, divers, media, photographers, videographers, and the tireless people working behind the scenes for months; thank you.

Together, we not only crossed the channel but also hit our fundraising goal of RM100k for mental health.

I’m proud to have done this — and I’d do it all over again in a heartbeat."

Courage in the Current is so grateful for REDtone for providing us with the connectivity via Starlink Internet, as the 10KM stretch from Lang Tengah Island to Redang Island has no phone line coverage.

This is to ensure the safety of the crew and team members are taken care of in case of any emergency to contact help in the Mainland.

I only started swimming a year ago. At first, it was just about picking up a new skill, but somewhere along the way I discovered something more; a passion I didn’t know I had. In the water, the noise of the world fades away. It calms me, it heals me, and it reminds me I’m alive.

I never knew Jo-Ee, but I was moved by her dream to raise awareness for mental health through the sea. Even though our paths never crossed, her courage speaks to me.

For me, this swim means more than just crossing the distance. Just like the waves- even when we feel like we’re sinking, we can still rise. I know how heavy life can feel at times, and that’s why I swim; to remind myself and others that we are never truly alone. Even in the darkest moments, there is always hope; and people who care.

We couldn't have created a safe space for open conversation and our upcoming 10 km swim expedition from Pulau Lang Tengah to Pulau Redang tomorrow (August 30th) without partners who truly understand the importance of supporting growth, resilience, and trust. Your involvement has not only made this project possible but also set the stage for long-term impact.

Thank you, Web.Plus Group, for backing us.

Although the name may be new, the legacy behind Web.Plus is built on decades of experience through WebNIC, RSP Solutions, and Reg.Asia. Their commitment to building digital trust, whether through domain management, brand protection, or digital security, reminds us that trust isn’t just built overnight. It’s nurtured, safeguarded, and continuously renewed.

We are deeply grateful for your support and belief in this journey. With Web.Plus by our side, we’re reminded that courage doesn’t just belong to individuals, it lives in the systems, the structures, and yes, the digital spaces we dare to build together.

Here’s to more meaningful partnerships rooted in trust and purpose.
From all of us 💖 at Courage in the Current. Thank you.

I felt an instant connection with Jo-Ee because, like me, she always brought her own containers and cutleries to our makan-makan gatherings, and reminded others to do the same to reduce waste. Her care for people and the environment showed clearly in both her words and actions.

To me, Courage in the Current is a movement that brings the swimming community together to reflect on mental health. This is a community effort, so does healing. Personally, I want to use this opportunity to deepen my understanding of su***de prevention.

Seeing my friends commit to this cause so wholeheartedly has inspired me to contribute in my own way. As a graphic designer who’s always been passionate about projects rooted in local culture, community, and the environment, I’m honoured to create the logo and visual materials for the team.

Although I won’t be taking part in the swim, my spirit is in the logo accompanying the team through the water and beyond!

A 10km swim from Lang Tengah to Redang is not just a physical challenge, but a powerful symbol of our commitment to mental health awareness. It is a promise to continue the dream of our late friend, Jo-Ee, a passionate mental health advocate who lived with bipolar type two and who we lost to su***de.

In a recent interview with Bernama TV World, Shauqie Aziz, Jo-Ee’s close friend and the Swim Expedition Commander, shared how Courage in the Current began. Jo-Ee wanted to use this swim to spark conversations about mental health and su***de prevention in Malaysia.

Today, we carry that vision forward with her spirit at the heart of every stroke. Shauqie speaks openly about the need to break stigma, challenge misconceptions, and make mental health care accessible for all.

This includes stronger support systems and mandatory insurance coverage for mental health conditions.

💌 Join us in honouring Jo-Ee and others who are struggling in silence and standing together to give them support.
