Social work lies at the heart of Christian ministry. Without acts of love, the Gospel risks becoming empty words.

Together with Catholic Welfare Services (CWS) and the KL Archdiocesan Office for Human Development (AOHD), we visited social service centres in Ipoh and Penang. From caring for the elderly to supporting children, these ministries reflect Christ’s love through compassionate and practical service.

Many among those they serve are the most vulnerable, especially in times of disaster—an area close to CREST’s mission. Some of the Little Sisters of the Poor nuns have faithfully served the elderly for over 70 years, while Good Shepherd services nurture children through education, protection, and care.

We are called to serve the least, the poor, and the lonely. Their dedication to service is a powerful witness.

Emergency coordination during disasters is often chaotic and disorganized. Despite the best intentions of responders, the delivery of aid frequently faces significant challenges and inefficiencies. This highlights a need for better preparedness and structured coordination.
CREST addresses this gap by providing disaster response training designed to strengthen the effectiveness of humanitarian teams. By equipping local responders with the skills and frameworks needed for coordinated action, CREST enables more efficient and more organized community recovery.
A key focus of CREST’s approach is the development of local coordination teams before disasters occur. Through training programs implemented across multiple countries, CREST helps establish clearly defined roles and responsibilities within communities. This proactive model ensures that, when disasters strike, response efforts are not only faster but also more structured and collaborative.
This approach is particularly vital for communities in Southeast Asia, where natural disasters occur frequently. Investing in the establishment of local coordination centers enhances resilience, reduces response time, and improves overall outcomes for affected communities.
CREST strongly believes that dedicating resources to building these local capacities is both a strategic and necessary investment. Strengthening community-based coordination systems leads to more effective humanitarian response and optimal recovery

CREST is a apolitical humanitarian agency. Our main focus is disaster recovery in communities affected by disasters.
Unfortunately it's always the poor, vulnerable and marginalised who are affected by natural calamities.
Together with other churches and Catholic AOHD, we followed up with the unending needs of the affected in the 2025 Mandalay earthquake. Cash has been distributed to families. Many are in debts over the loss of property and income. Names and places are withheld due to local sensitivities.
CREST wish to express our deepest appreciation for the funds from the Malaysian churches to our brethren in Myanmar.

CREST had collaborated with Malaysian Care over the years. It was was our pleasure being invited by the Executive Director, Frederick Foo, to share at the Malaysian Care HQ.
By pooling resources, mutual learning and partnership in aligning our common humanitarian approach to our social work, we shared about our challenges in sustainable and community based solutions. CREST and Malaysian Care might not be able to address all the social challenges but together we believe we can make a difference in the world we live in.

CREST is stocking food supplies in flood prone areas of Kelantan. Pre-stocking of food supplies plays a crucial role in increasing food security during floods, when essential services are often disrupted. Floods frequently damage roads and bridges making it difficult to transport food to affected areas. Pre-stocked food ensures that communities have immediate access to essential items even when supply chains are cut off. It protects vulnerable populations—such as children, the elderly, and low-income households—from food insecurity.
Pre-stocking supports faster and more effective disaster response. This reduces dependency on delayed emergency assistance.
Advance food storage enhances community resilience. Communities can focus on preparedness on safety, evacuation, and recovery. Finally, pre-stocking food complements early warning systems and evacuation plans. Together, these actions minimize the humanitarian impact of floods and help communities recover more quickly.
Overall, pre-stocking of food supplies is a cost-effective and life-saving strategy that strengthens food security and resilience in flood-prone areas.

Malnutrition is very common in remote villages of South East Asia countries. Development is rapid in urban areas but remote villages are often forgotten.
To address these inequalities, CREST deploys teams to remote villages, especially hilly areas. With daunting logistics in place, rapid assessment are used. Personally, I deploy the older Emergency Nutritional Assessment SMART. It's simple and gives a quick overview.
In this particular village, severe stunting is as high as 20%, predominantly among the females. Supplementary feeding would be recommended.

The CREST office will be closed from 25 December 2025 in conjunction with the Christmas holidays. The Board wishes everyone, good health & a blessed Christmas and New Year.

We will resume operations on 2 January 2026. We are constantly monitoring the monsoon season and will respond if required.

A summary of the events for 2025
1. Building Resilience, Restoring Hope
The year began and ended with a familiar challenge—flooding in Kelantan—reminding us of the ongoing vulnerability faced by many communities.
2. Flood Response in Kelantan
Working alongside AOHD and KDRN, CREST implemented the Raft Project to protect electrical equipment during floods and set up charging stations to ensure continuous access to power and communication. These efforts reflect our commitment to strengthening community resilience against recurring flood events. We are thankful for the collaboration of local civil defense teams, corporate donors, and NGO partners who enabled effective preparedness on the ground.
3. Earthquake Response in Sagaing, Mandalay
In April, CREST responded to the devastating 7.8-magnitude earthquake in Sagaing, Mandalay. The disaster claimed over 5,000 lives and damaged more than 120,000 buildings. Our immediate response focused on relief and coordination, with plans underway to support families in rebuilding their homes in the coming year.
4. CREST Charity Dinner
Our annual Charity Dinner brought together corporate partners, churches, and individual supporters. The event served both as a fundraiser and an expression of gratitude to our volunteers and partners who share CREST’s humanitarian vision and commitment.
5. Global Engagement and Reflection
CREST’s humanitarian work was recognized at the Abu Dhabi Forum of Peace for serving communities regardless of race, ethnicity, or religious background. We concluded the year with a group audience with the Pope at Vatican City during the Year of Jubilee, which calls for a transition from charity to justice. This moment reaffirmed our belief that the poor are not problems to be solved, but beloved brothers and sisters deserving dignity, compassion, and justice.

As we look ahead, CREST remains committed to responding to crises, strengthening resilience, and walking alongside vulnerable communities with hope and purpose.
Wishing you a blessed Christmas filled with love, peace, and joy, and a New Year ahead with good health, hope, and new beginnings. 🎄✨

The ongoing risk of floods in lying areas in Kelantan is associated with the Northeast Monsoon season and continuous heavy rainfall is expected in waves.
MET Malaysia has regularly issued continuous rain warnings for Kelantan. CREST channels aid from corporate donors to these affected. No one works alone in this endeavour. Local partners KDRN, AOHD and local APM office together collaborate to disburse aid effectively. Villagers who are stakeholders take charge in packing, organising and distribute the food items in an orderly manner. Everyone has a role in mitigating the effects of the monsoon rains. CREST is merely a facilitator in this operation.

CREST and AOHD have always adopted a holistic approach to community recovery in natural disasters. Subsequent to the raft project, we plan to keep phones charged to maintain communications in flood areas. Power stations were the best option.
With overwhelming response from the corporate sectors we map out the flooded areas that needed our help at the local civil defense office. After establishing the distribution points, the food items including flour, cooking oil, baked beans, buns, dry mee were packed into small bags to be given out.
In addition to meeting immediate needs, food security is strengthened to counter the recurrence episodes of floods over the next two months.

CREST has been working tirelessly in communities prone to disasters. To build resilience we have been adopting risk reduction measures in Rantau Panjang and Pasir Mas, Kelantan.
According to NADMA or Agensi Pengurusan Bencana Negara, there are already 220 Pusat Pemindahan Sementara PPS in seven states due to floods.
CREST will be sending a team to Kelantan coming Monday. The food and hygiene kits will be distributed. To maintain constant communication with these affected communities, portable power stations units will be donated for charging their mobile phones.
