Amnesty International Malaysia stands in solidarity with Wong Yan Ke.

We are disappointed by the Court of Appeal's decision to uphold his conviction for a peaceful act of student protest.

This ruling sends a worrying message at a time when those speaking out on issues of public interest increasingly face investigation, prosecution and other restrictions. Freedom of expression is a right guaranteed under Malaysia's Federal Constitution and must be protected, not penalized.

Peaceful protest is not a crime.

Amnesty International Malaysia has endorsed a joint statement with 18 other civil society organisations and individuals calling for an end to ongoing violations of Orang Asli land rights in Pahang.

Communities in Tasek Bera have faced eviction notices, harassment and arrests while defending their customary lands.

The undersigned are calling for the protection of Orang Asli Traditional Territories, meaningful consultation with affected communities, and an end to the negative portrayal of Orang Asli as drivers of deforestation.

Malaysia memulakan penghantaran pulang 1,476 warga Myanmar semalam sebagai fasa pertama daripada rancangan yang lebih besar untuk menghantar pulang 5,000 orang ke Myanmar.

Amnesty International Malaysia dan Asylum Access Malaysia mengecam penghantaran pulang ini dan memberi amaran bahawa menghantar orang kembali ke Myanmar meletakkan mereka pada risiko bahaya yang serius serta melanggar prinsip non-refoulement di bawah undang-undang adat antarabangsa.

Malaysia mesti segera menghentikan semua rancangan untuk menghantar pulang pelarian dan pencari suaka ke Myanmar.

Malaysia begins the deportation of 1,476 Myanmar nationals today, as the first phase of a broader plan to return 5,000 people to Myanmar.

Amnesty International Malaysia and Asylum Access Malaysia condemn the deportations, warning that returning people to Myanmar puts them at serious risk of harm and violates the principle of non-refoulement under customary international law.

Malaysia must immediately halt all plans to return refugees and asylum-seekers to Myanmar.

On 24 September, civil society organisations and refugee community groups gathered outside the Ministry of Home Affairs to protest Malaysia’s planned engagement with Myanmar’s Min Aung Hlaing and the deportation of Rohingya refugees to Myanmar.

Speaking at the protest, Joshua Ericsson from Amnesty International Malaysia stressed that any decision to return refugees must put human rights and protection first.

Malaysia must carefully consider the risks faced by those being returned and ensure that the voices of refugees, Rohingya and Myanmar nationals are heard.

We are deeply concerned by the Malaysian government’s arrest of human rights defenders and community organizers, Amir Hadi (MANDIRI) and Dobby Chew (HAYAT).

Their arrest marks a deeply alarming escalation following weeks of restrictions, including the freezing of bank accounts and the imposition of travel restrictions, all of which raise serious concerns about the shrinking space for human rights advocacy in Malaysia.

Authorities must immediately end measures that undermine civic space and ensure that laws and investigative powers are never used to target, intimidate or obstruct the legitimate work of civil society.

Malaysia sedang bersiap sedia untuk menghantar pulang 1,476 pelarian Rohingya ke Myanmar mulai 29 September sebagai kumpulan pertama daripada 5,000 orang di bawah perjanjian baharu dengan pihak berkuasa Myanmar.

Pertubuhan Bangsa-Bangsa Bersatu (PBB) menyatakan bahawa keadaan komuniti Rohingya di Negeri Rakhine kini berada pada tahap membimbangkan. Konflik, serangan udara dan penganiayaan masih mendorong mereka untuk melarikan diri bukannya pulang ke sana,

Prinsip non-refoulement merupakan prinsip asas perlindungan. Tiada sesiapa pun harus dihantar kembali ke tempat yang menyebabkan mereka berdepan risiko yang serius.

Malaysia telah lama bersuara mengenai kebertanggungjawaban terhadap Myanmar. Kredibiliti Malaysia dalam isu ini kini dipertaruhkan.
