We are encouraged to see more attention being given to the employment of persons with disabilities, as highlighted in this report.
MILAD President Siew Chin Sia shared an important reminder: while many companies today express willingness to hire persons with disabilities, the real question lies in the depth of support provided in practice. Employment inclusion is not only about opening job opportunities, but also about ensuring the workplace itself is truly accessible and enabling.
She pointed out that when companies are willing to improve workplace accessibility and provide necessary adjustments, persons with disabilities are able to enter and sustain meaningful employment more smoothly. However, when hiring intentions are not matched with concrete changes on the ground, barriers to employment remain in reality.
At MILAD, we echo this view. True inclusion goes beyond intention, it requires systems, environments, and attitudes that make participation genuinely possible.
We hope this ongoing conversation encourages more employers to reflect not only on whether they hire persons with disabilities, but also on how they support them once they do.
Sustainable inclusion is built through action, not intention alone.
