Cancer Research Malaysia was incorporated as company limited by guarantee in June 2000 with the support and donation from these key individuals and organisations: Tan Sri Azizan and Tan Sri Hassan Merican (PETRONAS), Tan Sri Lim Kok Thay and Mrs Leong Lim Siew Lian (Genting) and Lembaga Totalisator Malaysia. The Cancer Research Malaysia laboratory was established in Sime Darby Medical Centre (then

known as Subang Jaya Medical Centre) in Jan 2001. With just a temporary laboratory of 700 sq ft and only 6 scientists, the first months were focused on establishing collaborations to begin Malaysian cancer research. In August 2002, Cancer Research Malaysia moved into a custom-made facility provided rent-free by Sime Darby Medical Centre and Cancer Research Malaysia was officially launched by the Malaysian Prime Minister, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad in October 2002. At the core is a series of programmes based upon areas of strategic importance to Malaysian cancer research: focusing on cancers which are more common in Asians and understudied (such as oral and nasopharyngeal cancer), focusing on finding ways to reduce the burden of common cancers such as breast cancer, focusing on genetic and environmental risk factors in Asians, and focusing on Malaysia’s rich biodiversity in search for a cure for cancer.

Lung cancer remains Malaysia’s leading cause of cancer-related deaths, with many patients diagnosed at later stages.

This World Lung Cancer Day, we’re spotlighting LEDANG, Cancer Research Malaysia’s ongoing clinical trial studying a treatment combination could help offer a more affordable approach to treating late-stage non-small cell lung cancer.

While the trial is still ongoing, research like this helps us find ways to improve cancer care and expand treatment options for future patients.

We are proud to announce that Professor Dr Cheong Sok Ching, Chief Scientific Officer at Cancer Research Malaysia (CRMY), has been appointed as a member of the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) Asia Pacific Advisory Group.

The Advisory Group will provide strategic counsel to AACR on regional scientific priorities and opportunities to strengthen scientific collaboration across the Asia Pacific region.

Her appointment reflects Malaysia’s growing role in global oncology and strengthens our mission to ensure Asian patients are represented in the science shaping the future of cancer care.

Beyond her leadership at CRMY, she also serves as Adjunct Professor at Universiti Malaya, and is internationally recognised for her pioneering work in oral and head & neck cancer, early detection, digital health, and cancer research capacity building in Southeast Asia.

Cancer Research Malaysia is proud of our Board of Trustees member, Dr Voon Pei Jye, Head and Consultant Medical Oncologist, Department of Radiotherapy and Oncology, Sarawak General Hospital, on his presentation at the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) Drug Discovery and Development (AACR D3) meeting in Boston, Massachusetts.

Speaking in the session “Global Drug Discovery and Development: Progress, Challenges, and the Path Forward”, Dr Voon shared Malaysia’s experience in developing oncology clinical trials and the growth of clinical research in Sarawak.

It was a particularly proud moment to see Malaysian expertise represented at the AACR D3 global conference, reflecting our country’s growing contribution to international oncology research and drug development.

Malaysia’s expanding clinical trial landscape is essential to strengthening our capacity to develop and evaluate new cancer treatments, and to ensuring that Asian patients are represented in the research shaping the future of cancer care.

At Cancer Research Malaysia, we are excited by this momentum. Our work spans the translational pathway, from discovering new therapeutic targets and developing cancer vaccines to conducting clinical trials. Strong partnerships among scientists, clinicians, hospitals, industry and patients are essential to move promising discoveries from the laboratory into treatments that benefit patients.
