A total of 67 participants from GEC community groups in Malaysia and Indonesia, along with GEC staff, FRIM and SATJB, took part in a four-day, three-night peer learning programme on community-based ecotourism and cultural heritage tourism.
📌 Janda Baik, Pahang (9–11 Aug)
Facilitated by Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM) and Persatuan Sahabat Alam Tampik Janda Baik (SATJB), participants gained hands-on insights into SATJB's community-based ecotourism model through knowledge exchange, jungle trekking, nature and product interpretation activities, focus group discussions and community action planning.
📌 Kuala Langat, Selangor (11–12 Aug)
Sahabat Gambut Asli Temuan (SGAT) introduced participants to the Temuan community's approach in integrating indigenous culture, traditional knowledge and environmental conservation into sustainable tourism. Highlights included a Sewang dance performance, a guided Indigenous Village Tourism Programme (IVTP) tour and a presentation on IVTP implementation at Pulau Kempas. The programme wrapped up with an FGD applying the BAKAU and PADI frameworks, turning peer learning into practical community-driven CBET action plans.
The programme was implemented by GEC, FRIM and SATJB, supported by Aramco Malaysia, Jaringan Komuniti GEC (JKGEC), Yayasan Hasanah, Yayasan Sime Darby and TH Plantations Berhad.
Each participant received a Certificate of Participation awarded by JKGEC in recognition of their active engagement throughout the four-day peer learning exchange. The programme reaffirmed the importance of community ownership as the foundation for sustainable and impactful ecotourism development.
