GEC clinches 2026 ASEAN Green Initiative (AGI) Recognition

We are proud to announce that Global Environment Centre (GEC) has been recognised as an award recipient for ASEAN Green Initiative (AGI) 2026, under the Large-Scale Category.

This is a recognition of our people-centric approach to community-led ecosystem restoration through the Multi-Stakeholder Ecosystem Restoration of Forests, Peatlands and Coastal Landscapes in Malaysia, particularly in Johor, Kedah, Melaka, Perak and Selangor.

Yesterday, GEC’s Forest and Coastal Programme Manager, Mr Nagarajan Rengasamy received the ASEAN Green Initiative Award Recognition Ceremony at Seda Vertis North in Quezon City, the Philippines, held during the ASEAN Heritage Parks Forum 2026.

The award reaffirms GEC’s belief and commitment that communities are at the heart of conservation and they deliver real, lasting, and measurable impact.

This AGI recognition is for our restoration efforts in forests, mangroves, peatlands, coastal, and water catchment ecosystems where we have planted over 161,490 trees planted across 103 hectares, supported by 12 community groups, 259 community beneficiaries, and 16 corporate partners.

On that note, we wish to pay tribute to every community guardian and partner who has walked this restoration journey with us across these project sites, made possible through the dedication of our community groups, corporate funders, state forestry departments, local authorities, and all who have believed in and supported this mission.

The leadership and staff of GEC extend our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family members of Mr Bernard Raj Mariadass, our IT system manager who passed away recently. To the GEC family, he was more than a vendor and associate – in many ways he was one of us. He celebrated with us our milestones, and stood by us to face our challenges: always ready with a smile and a solution.

Bernard managed GEC’s IT systems for almost two decades – day and night, through weekdays, weekends, public holidays and the Covid pandemic. He ensured our systems ran smoothly, promptly attending to technological glitches and troubleshooting at almost a moment’s notice.

GEC has lost a key team member who was diligent, skilful, passionate, and knowledgable. We will also miss his helpfulness, friendliness and generosity.

May God grant Bernard eternal rest, light and peace.

Majlis Perasmian Penutupan Program Pemuliharaan Hutan Paya Laut dan Komuniti Berdaya Tahan Fasa 2 (2023 – 2026)

🗓️ 6 – 8 September 2026
📌 Sungai Petani, Kedah

Global Environment Centre (GEC) dan Yayasan Sime Darby (YSD) telah menganjurkan acara penutupan ini untuk menandakan penyempurnaan serta meraikan pencapaian program tersebut, merentasi Kedah, Perak, Selangor dan Johor.

Berlangsung selama 3 hari 2 malam, acara penutupan ini telah menghimpunkan enam kumpulan komuniti yang telah diperkasa, pelbagai agensi kerajaan, rakan kerjasama, dan pihak berkepentingan.

Acara bermula dengan majlis perasmian penutupan. Diikuti dengan aktiviti penanaman 1,000 pokok bakau di Kompartmen 10, Hutan Simpan Merbok pada hari kedua, serta Forum Keusahawanan Komuniti dan Latihan yang berlangsung pada hari kedua dan ketiga. Setiap aktiviti mencerminkan kepentingan kerjasama dalam melindungi ekosistem pesisir pantai secara berterusan.

Sepanjang Fasa 2, sebanyak 54,000 pokok bakau dan 8,250 pokok gantian telah ditanam meliputi kawasan seluas 26.6 hektar, di samping usaha pembangunan kapasiti, pendidikan dan peningkatan peluang pendapatan komuniti.

Terima kasih kepada enam kumpulan komuniti, agensi kerajaan, rakan kerjasama dan semua pihak yang telah bersama-sama menjayakan Fasa 2.

Strengthening Environmental Awareness

On 4 September 2026, 117 participants joined the Communication, Education and Public Awareness (CEPA) Programme at Surau Al Azaziah Fasa 3, Kg Cenderawasih, Pekan, Pahang.

The programme brought together the Pekan District Office, Department of Environment (DOE), Department of Agriculture (DOA), GEC and BOMBA Pekan for awareness and sharing sessions on:

🌱 Peatland awareness and conservation
🔥 Prevention of open burning and peatland fires
🌾 Sustainable agricultural practices
🧯 Fire safety

With El Niño conditions increasing the risk of dry weather and peatland fires, the sessions highlighted the importance of community awareness and preparedness in preventing fires and protecting the environment.

Participants also explored interactive exhibitions and mini games by GEC, Enggang and SMPEM, while BOMBA demonstrated proper fire extinguisher use and emergency response.

As we celebrate our 69 years of independence today and mark 63 years of nationhood with Sabah, Sarawak and Federal Territory Labuan on Sept 16, 2026, we are immensely grateful for this beautiful land we live in: surrounded by lush forests, healthy river and waterbodies, with abundance of rich biodiversity which we hope to continue to protect and conserve for the shared prosperity of generations of Anak Malaysia to come.

Happy World Lake Day 2026

In Malaysia, urban lakes, retention ponds and bioswales are vital natural buffers to store heavy rainwater, slow peak runoff, and prevent flash floods. However, they are faced with severe environmental degradation driven by rapid urbanisation, agricultural runoff, and climate shifts.

According to survey by National Hydraulic Research Institute of Malaysia (NAHRIM), over 60% of surveyed lakes suffer from excess nutrients, like nitrogen and phosphorus: eutrophication, which lead to toxic agal blooms, low oxygen levels, frequent fish kills, and a severe loss of aquatic biodiversity across both natural and man-made waterbodies.

GEC has been working on restoration and conservation of urban lakes in Selangor, particularly in Cyberjaya, as well as Petaling Jaya’s Kelana Jaya and Taman Aman.

Petaling Jaya uses its key urban recreational lakes as primary stormwater retention basins to capture heavy surface runoff and mitigate local flash flooding.

Despite these natural buffers, rapid urbanisation, narrowed drainage channels, and extreme short-term downpours continue to overwhelm the city. In July this year, Petaling Jaya was hit by massive flash floods, following an exceptionally heavy rainfall over a short period which exceeded the capacity of existing drainage systems.

GEC is also working to conserve natural lakes such as Tasek Bera in Pahang, Malaysia's largest natural lake with extensive freshwater swamp forests and unique lake basin peat deposits.

GEC’s work in lake restoration and conservation is now becoming increasingly important, urgent and relevant.

On 24 August, GEC participated in the 2026 National Mangrove and Coastal Seminar, held at the national level in conjunction with the International Mangrove Ecosystem Conservation Day Celebration, in Alor Setar, Kedah.

A member of Jaringan Komuniti GEC (JKGEC), Pertubuhan Sahabat Hutan Bakau Kampung Taman Nilam (PSHBKTN), received an Appreciation Award, presented by Duli Yang Teramat Mulia Tengku Sarafudin Badlishah Ibni Al-Aminul Karim Sultan Sallehuddin, Tuanku Raja Muda Kedah, for their commitment to mangrove conservation and coastal rehabilitation in Kota Kuala Muda District, Kedah, under the National Mangrove Planting Programme 2025.

Congratulations to PSHBKTN on this well-deserved recognition!

Supported by Yayasan Sime Darby (YSD) and Leader Energy Group Berhad, GEC together with PSHBKTN, Pertubuhan Sahabat Hutan Bakau Pulau Tanjung Surat (SHBPTS), and Pertubuhan Sahabat Hutan Bakau Kuala Gula (SHBKG) attended the seminar and showcased our experiences and successful restoration sites across several states at the exhibition.

GEC also highlighted community-based restoration progress in the Merbok Forest Reserve, Kota Kuala Muda District, Kedah, including restoration outcomes, survival conditions, and growth rates at Compartments FC10 and FC11.

Strengthening Community Awareness in RPS Runchang, Pahang

GEC, with support from SMPEM and other partners, organised a CEPA programme that brought together 84 local community members and representatives from various agencies, with a focus on peatland conservation, fire prevention and El Niño.

The programme featured sessions on:

✅ El Niño and weather conditions by the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia)
✅ Fire safety and emergency response by the Fire and Rescue Department of Malaysia (BOMBA)
✅ Open burning and related legislation by the Department of Environment (DOE)
✅ Peatland biodiversity and conservation by GEC

The programme also included a colouring competition for children and a hands-on fire extinguishing demonstration, where local villagers had the opportunity to practise basic fire response techniques under the guidance of BOMBA personnel.

These activities help strengthen community awareness and preparedness in protecting the Southeast Pahang Peat Swamp Forest.

A total of 67 participants from GEC community groups in Malaysia and Indonesia, along with GEC staff, FRIM and SATJB, took part in a four-day, three-night peer learning programme on community-based ecotourism and cultural heritage tourism.

📌 Janda Baik, Pahang (9–11 Aug)
Facilitated by Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM) and Persatuan Sahabat Alam Tampik Janda Baik (SATJB), participants gained hands-on insights into SATJB's community-based ecotourism model through knowledge exchange, jungle trekking, nature and product interpretation activities, focus group discussions and community action planning.

📌 Kuala Langat, Selangor (11–12 Aug)
Sahabat Gambut Asli Temuan (SGAT) introduced participants to the Temuan community's approach in integrating indigenous culture, traditional knowledge and environmental conservation into sustainable tourism. Highlights included a Sewang dance performance, a guided Indigenous Village Tourism Programme (IVTP) tour and a presentation on IVTP implementation at Pulau Kempas. The programme wrapped up with an FGD applying the BAKAU and PADI frameworks, turning peer learning into practical community-driven CBET action plans.

The programme was implemented by GEC, FRIM and SATJB, supported by Aramco Malaysia, Jaringan Komuniti GEC (JKGEC), Yayasan Hasanah, Yayasan Sime Darby and TH Plantations Berhad.

Each participant received a Certificate of Participation awarded by JKGEC in recognition of their active engagement throughout the four-day peer learning exchange. The programme reaffirmed the importance of community ownership as the foundation for sustainable and impactful ecotourism development.
