Last week, GECโ€™s Director Mr Faizal Parish was at Samarkand, Uzbekistan for the 8th Global Environment Facility (GEF) Assembly.

As Chair of Global Environment Facility Civil Society Organization (GEF-CSO) Network, he delivered a clarion call to GEF member countries at the opening ceremony on 4 June 2026. The statement reflected the collective views of over 200 participants of the GEF Civil Society Forum held in Samarkand on 3 June 2026.

Mr Faizal is currently serving his second consecutive term as Network Chair after first assuming the role in 2024.

The 8th GEF Assembly has been an important platform for translating ambitious commitments into action for biodiversity, climate resilience, pollution reduction, and community-led conservation.

GEC attended the Biodiversity Forum 2026 in Putrajaya, organised by the Malaysian Palm Oil Green Conservation Foundation (MPOGCF) and co-organised by the Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB).

The two-day (3โ€“4 June) forum brought together various stakeholders to discuss biodiversity challenges, with focus on Human-Elephant Conflict (HEC) in oil palm landscapes affecting both large estates and smallholders. The forum also explored mitigation approaches to reduce human-wildlife conflicts while strengthening biodiversity conservation.

As a project partner, GEC showcased a poster on the implementation of camera traps and peatland landscape conservation efforts in the Klias Peninsula Peatland Landscape (KPPL), Beaufort, Sabah.

On this World Environment Day 2026, GEC is proud to share that we have been officially recognised by the Jabatan Perhutanan Negeri Perak (Hutan Perak) as a Strategic Partner!

Yesterday (4 June 2026), our Forest & Coastal Programme Manager, Mr Nagarajan Rengasamy received a Certificate of Appreciation and a Merbau tree, presented by YAB Dato' Seri Saarani bin Mohamad, Menteri Besar Perak, at the State-Level International Day of Forests Celebration in Ipoh.

During the ceremony, GEC team together with our community partners showcased forest and economy-themed efforts including mangrove-based products and ecotourism packages in Kuala Gula, Kampung Tonggang, Kampung Makmur and Kampung Kenang which attracted great interest from the Menteri Besar and attendees.

We are also thrilled to share that the Kuala Gula Mangrove Forest has been officially gazetted as a Permanent Forest Reserve covering 351.58 hectares, with the Kuala Gula Management Plan endorsed by the Perak State Government.

This is a significant milestone for community-based mangrove conservation ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿป

Under the Paris Agreement, the world agreed to limit the increase in global average temperature to 1.5ยฐC above pre-industrial levels.

Are we on track?
Not quite. In fact, we are crossing it.

About 10 years ago, climate change felt distant to many. Today, we can all feel its impacts i.e. extreme heat and droughts, more frequent floods and fires as well as other natural disasters affecting communities around the world.

But amid these challenges, climate solutions are also taking root across many sectors and communities.

From ecosystem restoration and sustainable land management to renewable energy and community-led initiatives. Meaningful efforts are happening, and they need to accelerate.

On this World Environment Day 2026, we are reminded that climate action cannot wait for tomorrow. The decisions and actions we take today will shape the future of our planet and generations to come.

The time to act is .

Did you know? Peatlands store nearly 30% of all global soil carbon.

However, when peatlands are drained, dried or burned, they release a significant amount of stored carbon. Protecting them has never been more crucial. It takes communities, partnerships and long-term commitment.

On this World Peatlands Day, we are grateful for every local community, government agency, funder and partner who has walked alongside us, for local actions across Malaysia, and in Indonesia. And not to forget, the partners and peat experts across the globe.

Thank you for your trust and continued support. Together, we keep peatlands alive.

GEC has been appointed as a consultant to develop the Pahang State Action Plan for Peatlands (SAPP Pahang) 2026-2035.

On 19 May 2026, GEC has organised the final Focus Group Discussion (FGD) in partnership with the Pahang State Forestry Department (JPNP) to obtain input from key state agencies and stakeholders on the final draft of SAPP Pahang 2026-2035.

Officiated by JPNP, the workshop brought together 71 representatives from multiple government agencies and the private sector. Key components discussed included goals, action plans and strategies to further strengthen the zonation management of different peatland landscapes across Pahang and address implementation challenges.

Discussions also focused on identifying potential financing mechanisms including State and Federal Budgets, private sector, State Disaster Trust Fund, Ecological Fiscal Transfer (EFT) and climate finance.

The revised plan is currently being prepared for submission to JPNP by end of June before its final submission to the State Government for formal adoption.

GEC and the Sabah State Government (represented by the Sabah Forestry Department) have signed a 5-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on peat swamp forest conservation and management.

Effective from 4 May 2026, the MoU will strengthen collaboration between GEC, the State Government, the private sector and local communities to implement conservation and restoration efforts within designated forest reserves in Sabah.

At the time of the International Day of Biological Diversity on 22 May and World Peatland Day on 2 June, let's look forward to building partnerships for the environment in the Land Below the Wind.
