AWAM sends our warmest wishes to all who are celebrating Kaamatan and Gawai this year. As we celebrate the harvest season, may it remind us of the strength found in unity in diversity and the importance of building a nation where people of all backgrounds can live with dignity, equality, and mutual respect.

May the fruits of harvest create a Malaysia that is free from corruption, and where no one is left behind, especially those who have for so long been marginalised, and where prosperity is enjoyed truly, fairly and equally by all.

Every year on 28th May is World Menstrual Hygiene Day. Yet menstrual health itself remains surrounded by taboo, stigma and shame for the millions of Malaysians, and the billions of women worldwide who experience menstruation every month.

Surrounding menstruation, period poverty continues to deny countless women and girls the basic products needed to manage their periods safely, hygienically, and without shame. This can significantly affect their physical and mental health, educational outcomes, income-earning opportunities, and participation in society.

Period poverty is not simply about access to pads or tampons. It is about the inability to afford menstrual products, access clean and safe facilities, receive accurate menstrual health education, or manage menstruation with dignity.

Ending it requires long-term commitment through accessible menstrual products, comprehensive menstrual health education, better healthcare support, safe sanitation facilities, and government policies that recognise menstrual health as a fundamental right.
