𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐇𝐢𝐬 𝐅𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐲, 𝐄𝐯𝐞𝐧 𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐇𝐢𝐬 𝐊𝐧𝐞𝐞 𝐂𝐚𝐧’𝐭

At just 24 years old, 𝐌𝐮𝐡𝐚𝐦𝐦𝐚𝐝 𝐅𝐢𝐤𝐫𝐢 𝐁𝐢𝐧 𝐀𝐥𝐢𝐚𝐬 carries the weight of an entire family on his shoulders. A construction worker from Puchong, Fikri is the main source of support for his elderly parents and a younger sister with mental disability living in Kedah.

Every month, from his modest income of 𝐑𝐌𝟐,𝟖𝟎𝟎 (𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞), he sends 𝐑𝐌𝟏,𝟑𝟎𝟎 𝐭𝐨 𝐑𝐌𝟏,𝟓𝟎𝟎 home — often leaving little for himself. Yet today, Fikri’s ability to keep going is under threat.

𝐀 𝐁𝐨𝐝𝐲 𝐓𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐆𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐖𝐚𝐲, 𝐛𝐮𝐭 𝐚 𝐒𝐩𝐢𝐫𝐢𝐭 𝐓𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐃𝐢𝐝𝐧’𝐭
Fikri has lived with recurring injuries to his right knee since his student days. In 2020, a football injury left him limping for months because he could not afford proper treatment. Subsequent falls in 2021 and 2023 further weakened the joint.
In June 2024, he slipped on a wet floor outside his home. His knee locked instantly, swelling within hours. The pain was unbearable. An MRI later confirmed a 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐭𝐞 𝐀𝐂𝐋 𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐮𝐬 𝐝𝐚𝐦𝐚𝐠𝐞 — an injury that requires surgery.

“𝐈 𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐠𝐨 𝐭𝐨 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐝𝐚𝐲, 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐦𝐲 𝐤𝐧𝐞𝐞 𝐬𝐰𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐬 𝐚𝐭 𝐧𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭, 𝐛𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐦𝐲 𝐟𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐲 𝐝𝐞𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐬 𝐨𝐧 𝐦𝐞.”

𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐝 𝐁𝐞𝐭𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐏𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲
Fikri works at construction sites where constant walking and standing are unavoidable. Without surgery, his knee is unstable, weak, and painful. Doctors warn that delaying treatment could lead to permanent damage and early arthritis.
Although surgery was arranged at a government hospital, Fikri was required to pay 𝐑𝐌𝟏𝟕,𝟎𝟎𝟎 𝐮𝐩𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐭 for the implant. His SOCSO application failed. With no savings, ongoing loan commitments, and no one left to borrow from, the surgery had to be postponed.

𝐒𝐭𝐨𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐢𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐚𝐧 𝐨𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧. 𝐈𝐟 𝐈 𝐟𝐚𝐥𝐥, 𝐦𝐲 𝐟𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐲 𝐟𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐬 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐦𝐞.”

𝐌𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐓𝐡𝐚𝐧 𝐚 𝐌𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐂𝐚𝐬𝐞
Fikri is young, hardworking, and responsible — but like many in the B40 group, he has no safety net. His parents are retired, his siblings earn modest incomes, and his OKU sister depends on him for daily care needs.

Without surgery, he risks losing his ability to work. With it, he can stand, walk, and continue supporting his family with dignity.

𝐀 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐇𝐞𝐥𝐩 𝐇𝐢𝐦 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐀𝐠𝐚𝐢𝐧
The estimated cost of Fikri’s surgery was 𝐑𝐌𝟑𝟎,𝟎𝟎𝟎. Recognising the urgency of his condition and his financial constraints, 𝐒𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐖𝐞𝐥𝐟𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐀𝐒𝐒𝐈𝐒𝐒, together with the 𝐊𝐮𝐨𝐤 𝐅𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧, came forward to offer support for his treatment.

In year 2025, Fikri successfully underwent, 𝐀𝐂𝐋 𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐢𝐫 𝐚𝐭 𝐀𝐬𝐬𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐚 𝐇𝐨𝐬𝐩𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥. Following the operation and early rehabilitation, he has progressed well toward recovery. His knee is healing well, with improved stability, allowing him to walk more confidently and continue his rehabilitation with the goal of returning to work safely.

This is not just about repairing a knee.
It is about restoring stability — for a young man determined to stand on his own feet, and for the family who depends on him every day.

For many in our community especially those living in poverty a wound is not just a physical injury. It brings fear, stress, and life-altering challenges.
ASSISS Wound Care services offer free care to patients with chronic, non-healing wounds. Outpatient facilities for regular dressings are available at Assunta Hospital, with each wound closely monitored by our medical personnel. For patients who are homebound, our team provides essential home visits. Our criteria as below:
* Malaysian with blue or pink IC holder
* All age groups are eligible
* Household income Rm2500/month or below. Total household dependents and other household commitments will also taken into account
* current residential address falls within 1 hour travels from assunta hospital.

𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗮 𝗪𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴: 𝗠𝗮𝗱𝗮𝗺 𝗦𝗵𝗮 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆

One such patient is Madam Sha. She suffers from Charcot foot on her left leg. Due to repeated infections, doctors once recommended an amputation. However, Madam Sha struggled to make a decision. She and her husband have no children, and he must continue working to support them both. With no one to care for her after surgery, she felt trapped and overwhelmed.
“When the doctor told me they couldn’t save my leg, I couldn’t accept it,” she said. “I was scared and stressed. At first, I believed my leg could still be saved. I felt angry at myself… and hopeless.”

During this difficult time, the ASSISS Wound Care team stood by her. Our home visits made a huge difference—especially when transportation became a major obstacle. “Sometimes we waited a long time for Grab,” she explained. “Some drivers cancelled after seeing I was in a wheelchair. A round trip to Klinik Kesihatan costs RM18 to RM20. When you don’t have enough money, even that becomes a big burden. We live on the 17th floor. If the lift breaks down, we can’t even go out.”
Today, there is good news. Madam Sha wound has shown positive progress and continues to improve. She remains under regular follow-up at the government hospital and at the moment no need to go for any surgery.
Madam Sha’s story reminds us that healing is not just about medicine. It’s about compassion, accessibility, and walking with our patients step by step on their journey to recovery.

𝗦𝗧𝗥𝗢𝗞𝗘

In March 2025, Mr. Ling suffered a stroke resulting in right hemiparesis and was admitted to Hospital Kuala Lumpur (HKL). Following the acute treatment phase, he was discharged home. Mr. Ling has a prior history of bilateral below-knee amputations caused by severe burns and subsequent infections due to poor wound management.

His ability to ambulate was severely impacted by both the stroke and his amputation. He struggled with daily activities and experienced a significant loss of confidence and self-worth.

Mr. Ling’s wife reached out to the ASSISS Stroke Ancillary Programme for assistance. A home visit and initial assessment were conducted, and a personalized treatment plan was developed by our physiotherapist team. Weekly physiotherapy sessions focused on building strength, improving mobility, and enhancing his functional independence.

After three months of intensive physiotherapy, Mr.Ling able to sit to stand and ambulate independently using a walking frame with his prosthetic legs. He also able to climb stairs with supervision and most importantly, he can now leave his house and perform many of his daily activities.

Mr. Ling has expressed profound gratitude for the support and care received, and he is thrilled with the progress made. His journey highlights the critical importance of comprehensive rehabilitation services and community support for individuals facing complex medical challenges.

Mr. Ling’s case demonstrates that with holistic care, personalized intervention, and consistent support, stroke survivors with complex histories can achieve meaningful recovery and regain independence. His determination, combined with the compassionate efforts of the ASSISS team, turned a life-altering condition into a story of hope and resilience.

A Stroke or Cerebrovascular Accident (CVA) occurs when part of the brain loses its blood supply, causing that region of the brain to stop functioning. As a result, the body functions controlled by the affected part of the brain are impaired. Common effects include difficulty walking, speech impairments, and reduced ability to perform daily tasks.

The ASSISS Stroke Ancillary Programme provides essential support to stroke survivors by addressing their post-stroke challenges through regular physiotherapy and holistic care. To be eligible for the programme, applicants must meet all the following criteria:

● Household income must be less than RM2,500 per month.
● Must be a Malaysian citizen (MyKad holders).
● Diagnosed with any type of stroke or motor neuron disease.
● Willing to actively participate in physiotherapy sessions and follow the prescribed rehabilitation plan.
● No age restriction.
● Have limited access to healthcare facilities or face difficulties traveling to therapy centers.
● Have a family member or caregiver available to assist with prescribed home therapy exercises.
● Reside’s within 1 hours travel from Assunta Hospital
