One of the most pressing questions facing Malaysia's property sector today is not whether we are building enough homes, but whether we are building the

As highlighted by REHDA INSTITUTE, addressing Malaysia's housing challenges requires moving beyond housing supply targets towards a better understanding of market demand, affordability and demographic trends. Long-term solutions will depend on aligning development with actual market needs through better data, stronger policy coordination and continuous collaboration among stakeholders.

At REHDA W.P. Kuala Lumpur, we believe that meaningful collaboration between government, policymakers, researchers and industry players is essential in creating a housing ecosystem that is balanced, sustainable and responsive to the needs of Malaysians.

Ultimately, the goal is not simply to build more homes, but to ensure Malaysians have access to homes that are affordable, liveable and aligned with where people choose to live and work.

As Malaysia's urban landscape continues to evolve, addressing housing challenges requires more than policy discussionsโ€”it demands meaningful collaboration, robust research and data-driven decision-making.

Central to this effort was the Senior Leadership Circle Roundtable, held under the newly formed Malaysiaโ€“Cambridge Urban Platform (MCUP). The platform convened senior policymakers, industry leaders and renowned academics to bridge research, policy and practice in addressing Malaysia's evolving urban housing challenges. Led by the Ministry of Housing and Local Government (KPKT Malaysia), with REHDA INSTITUTE as the strategic collaboration partner, MCUP represents a significant step towards fostering cross-sector collaboration and developing practical, evidence-based solutions for the nation's urban future.

The inaugural dialogue focused on two key priorities:
โ€ข Rethinking how housing affordability is measured to better reflect market realities and support more effective policymaking.
โ€ข Leveraging data, digital innovation and smart city technologies to enhance urban planning, infrastructure investment and the development of sustainable, resilient and liveable communities.

As cities become increasingly complex, stronger collaboration between government, academia and industry will be essential in shaping policies that respond to current challenges while preparing for future urban growth.

REHDA W.P. Kuala Lumpur welcomes initiatives that encourage knowledge exchange, policy innovation and collaborative leadership in advancing more inclusive, sustainable and future-ready urban communities.

REHDA W.P. Kuala Lumpur recently organised a Learning Tour to UOB Plaza 1 Kuala Lumpur on 9th July 2026, providing members with the opportunity to gain firsthand insights into one of Malaysia's leading examples of sustainable and people-centric workplace development.

The visit was truly an eye-opening experience, showcasing how Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) principles can be meaningfully integrated beyond compliance and certifications. Through thoughtful architecture, innovative interior design and sustainable building operations, UOB Plaza 1 demonstrates how the built environment can directly influence employee well-being, workplace collaboration and organisational culture.

Participants were introduced to the building's sustainability initiatives, energy-efficient systems and workplace strategies that have earned UOB Plaza 1 prestigious recognitions, including the GreenRE Platinum Certification, National Energy Awards 2024 and ASEAN Energy Efficiency & Conservation Best Practices Awards 2024.

More importantly, the visit highlighted how good building design is not merely about aesthetics or functionalityโ€”it plays a vital role in creating healthier, more engaging and productive work environments. As the industry continues its transition towards sustainable development, projects such as UOB Plaza 1 serve as valuable benchmarks for how ESG can be translated into tangible outcomes for building occupants and businesses alike.

A sincere thank you to the UOB Kuala Lumpur management team for the warm hospitality, insightful sharing session and valuable networking opportunity with their senior management representatives.

On 7 July 2026, REHDA W.P. Kuala Lumpur and REHDA Selangor were honoured to host a courtesy visit from Lembaga Urus Air Selangor (LUAS), Institut Geologi Malaysia (IGM) and Jabatan Mineral Dan Geosains Selangor/Wilayah Persekutuan (JMG).

Beyond strengthening ties between the industry and government agencies, the session provided useful insights into groundwater utilisation for development and construction, as well as the importance of incorporating geological information at the early stages of project planning.

Among the topics shared were the potential benefits of groundwater as an alternative water source, geological risk management through the Borang Pengesahan Geologi Tapak (BPGT), and how early geological assessments can help minimise project delays, optimise planning and support more sustainable development outcomes.

Thank you to LUAS, IGM and JMG for the informative sharing session. We look forward to continued collaboration and knowledge exchange in support of a more resilient and sustainable built environment.
