We extend heartfelt thanks and many congratulations to the BSKL for Malayan Tigers team for their remarkable support of tiger conservation. On 8 June, the students passed an incredible RM102,800 raised through T-shirt sales, Pak Belang’s Market, and charity matches between staff and older students to WWF-Malaysia and the Department of Wildlife and National Parks (PERHILITAN).

“We are honoured to stand here today alongside our partners from PERHILITAN to celebrate your outstanding achievement and receive this generous contribution in support of tiger conservation. Your dedication, leadership and passion have made a real difference,” said Tay Mooi Geok, WWF-Malaysia Senior Director of Partnerships.

Azlan Mohamed, Head of the WWF-Malaysia Tiger Conservation Programme, also thanked the BSKL for Malayan Tigers team, “I've spent many years working to protect tigers in Malaysia. While the challenges are real, moments like this give us hope. Your efforts send a powerful message that young people care about protecting our natural heritage. We look forward to continuing this journey together. Thank you for helping ensure that the Malayan tiger remains part of Malaysia's future.”

The partnership between WWF-Malaysia and Maybank began from a moment of real urgency. At the time, Malayan tiger numbers were declining at an alarming rate, driven by poaching, habitat loss, and weak protection on the ground.

There simply were not enough resources to protect one of Malaysia’s most iconic species. Recognising that the situation could not be reversed without strong collective action, Maybank stepped forward to partner with WWF-Malaysia in 2016 to strengthen conservation efforts in the Belum-Temengor Forest Complex.

What began as an urgent response to prevent the tiger’s extinction has since grown into a long-term commitment to protecting Malaysia’s natural heritage and restoring hope for the species.

In Sabah’s seas, the story of the sharks and rays is changing. The biggest threat? Juvenile catches. Most sharks and rays are caught before they are old enough to reproduce.

But the community is fighting back! 🌊 The Sharks and Rays Guardians, a team of 13 dedicated fishers, are rescuing these babies from nets, with a 61% success rate in returning them alive to their homes.

Together, we can ensure these vital species continue to thrive. Please visit wwf.org.my/shark to help save our sharks and rays, thank you. 💙

Happy World Ocean Day, let’s show our sea turtles some love this month!

The 2025 global IUCN Red List reclassification of green turtles from ‘Endangered’ (since 1982) to ‘Least Concern’ in October 2025 is an encouraging milestone for sea turtle conservation. Together with our generous supporters and partners, we have shown that we can turn the tide for turtles.

However, serious threats to turtles remain. In the 1950s, Rantau Abang once saw 10,000 leatherback turtle nests a year. By 2017, they were gone. Green turtles are recovering, but we cannot let our critically endangered hawksbill turtles face the same fate as the leatherback turtles, nor let the progress of green turtles reverse. We should continue efforts to sustain what Malaysia and the world have worked so hard to achieve.

Please donate at wwf.org.my/turtle2026 to strengthen conservation from nest to foraging grounds across state and national boundaries. Identifying migration routes and protecting foraging grounds is just as important as protecting nesting sites to conserve turtles at all stages of life.

Thank you for helping to save our sea turtles.

We proudly commemorated the 10th Anniversary of Tun Mustapha Park (TMP) at an event organised by our partner, Sabah Parks. The milestone marks a decade of progress in marine conservation and community stewardship across one of Malaysia’s most important seas.

As Malaysia’s largest multi-use marine park, TMP continues to demonstrate how biodiversity conservation can go hand in hand with the wellbeing and livelihoods of coastal communities.

Just last year, TMP recorded significant conservation milestones:
Achieved the nation’s largest coral restoration event with nearly 500 participants in May 2025, bringing together partners, communities, and volunteers in a collective effort to restore reef ecosystems
Recorded its highest turtle nesting numbers to date, with 64 turtle nests secured for incubation and 3,253 eggs safeguarded during the 2025 nesting season.

These achievements are further strengthened by the park’s ongoing journey towards achieving International Union for Conservation of Nature Green List recognition, reflecting its commitment to effective and equitable protected area management.

Here’s to the next decade of safeguarding our shared ocean, strengthening community-led conservation, and building a resilient future for both people and nature.

Day 1 in the field starts earlier than expected where we are packing up, loading equipment, and preparing for the journey ahead. 🌿

After arriving at Batang Ai Jetty, the team coordinated logistics for the longboat ride to our first destination with the local community. From balancing supplies between boats to unloading equipment from the van, every step required teamwork and planning. 🚤

Fieldwork often looks exciting from the outside, but there’s also a lot happening behind the scenes to make every trip possible.

In this episode of , we’re sharing a closer look at the journey before reaching the field site, the preparation, coordination, and moments in between. 📸

Stay tuned for the next episode featuring the longboat journey through Batang Ai!

Why are Malayan tigers disappearing?

The threats are real - and relentless:
🚫 Poaching and illegal wildlife trade
🌳 Habitat loss and fragmentation
⚡ Increasing human-wildlife conflict

Every snare set in the forest doesn’t just target one animal — it threatens an entire ecosystem. But on the ground, ranger teams are working tirelessly to remove traps, monitor wildlife, and protect what remains.

The fight isn’t over.

When tigers disappear, the forest changes. As apex predators, tigers keep ecosystems in balance — controlling prey populations and maintaining the health of our forests.

And healthy forests mean:
🌧 Clean water
🌿 Climate regulation
🐘 Space for wildlife to thrive

Protecting tigers isn’t just about saving a species. It’s about protecting the natural systems we all depend on.

Because when the tiger survives, the forest survives too.
