NAPEI Deputy President Dr Teh Choon Jin shares his views on the importance of protecting education quality through smarter and more targeted spending, following the Prime Minister's call for ministries to optimise expenditure. Education should be viewed as an investment, not merely an expense.

Priority should be given to addressing immediate needs, particularly the repair and upgrading of dilapidated schools.

For higher education, students must remain at the centre of spending priorities. Investments that strengthen teaching and learning, graduate employability, industry exposure and student development should continue. Read more:

โ€œWish in My Heart, Walk by the Lightโ€ was the themed for the annual appreciation dinner hosted by UNM Consultancy (ไธญ้ฉฌ็ซ‹ๅ”ฏๅ›ฝ้™…ๆ•™่‚ฒ) at the end of April.

The evening brought together representatives from the Ministry of Education Malaysia, leaders of global international schools, and valued partners from across the education community, a meaningful reflection of the strong collaboration within the international education sector.

It was especially encouraging to hear from Puan Siti Bahijah binti Bakhtiar, Deputy Director of the Private Education Group of the Ministry of Education Malaysia, who affirmed the positive role of Chinaโ€“Malaysia relations in strengthening international education and fostering greater educational exchanges between both nations.

Events like these remind us of the importance of partnerships, shared vision, and continued collaboration in shaping Malaysiaโ€™s position as a leading education hub in the region.

The call for reintroducing English-medium streams in schools continues to generate discussion nationwide.

NAPEI Deputy President, Teh Choon Jin shared that while strengthening English proficiency is important, reintroducing English-medium streams alone is not a practical solution at this stage. Malaysia currently faces limitations in the number of teachers trained to teach fully in English and such a move could further widen urban-rural inequality due to differing exposure levels and resources.

More importantly, graduate unemployment cannot be solved through language streams alone.
The bigger challenge is ensuring graduates possess: โ€ข critical thinking skills
โ€ข effective communication ability
โ€ข workplace confidence
โ€ข practical industry exposure

A balanced bilingual approach is therefore more sustainable โ€” preserving Bahasa Melayu as the national language while strengthening English proficiency, particularly in STEM, TVET and globally oriented industries.

Malaysiaโ€™s competitive advantage lies in producing graduates who are multilingual, adaptable and industry-ready. Read more:-
