Co-existing Safely with Strays & Pets (Part 4)

In this next part, together with Team Pawsitive Lion (Thazkiyah, Estelle, Alisa, Kristen, Isabel & Kay), we address an important and often misunderstood topic 👉🏼 animal bites, rabies awareness, and how to respond responsibly.

Let’s be clear:
Not every bite = rabies.
Not every “aggressive” animal is rabid.

In West Malaysia, rabies is not endemic, yet fear and misinformation often lead to panic, wrongful assumptions, and unfortunately, harm towards innocent animals.

✨ Why this matters:
When fear takes over facts, we risk reacting in ways that are harmful, unnecessary, and not aligned with an informed, progressive society.

At the same time, awareness is still important.
Knowing how to manage a bite properly, seek medical attention when needed, and understand what constitutes a suspected rabies case helps keep both people and animals safe.

💭 Responsible co-existence means:
• Acting based on knowledge, not fear
• Protecting ourselves while remaining fair to animals
• Avoiding harmful assumptions that lead to cruelty

We can be cautious without being unjust.
We can stay safe without creating fear-driven narratives.

Let’s continue building a community that is informed, responsible, and compassionate 🔆 a true caring community that does right by both humans and the animals we share our spaces with. 💛

Today, Animal Kindness Coalition had the opportunity to conduct a workshop with a student-led CCA volunteering group, Spes Aurum, from Help International School.

Led by senior students in their pre-university program, is a group committed to preparing younger students (ages 13–16) to become more thoughtful and effective volunteers. They create a platform for learning, real-life exposure, and growth - whether the students continue their journey in helping people, animals, or both.

Our role today was to share the reality of animal welfare.

Because animal welfare is not just about cute animals.
It exists because of real issues 👉🏼 abandonment, irresponsible ownership, and gaps in awareness.

At its core, animal welfare is about solving problems created by humans.

We spoke about:
• Consistency over one-off actions
• Being mentally and emotionally prepared
• Understanding impact, not just intention

And most importantly, we left them with a question:

📌 What kind of volunteer do you want to be?
❓A short-term helper, or a long-term, impactful member of society?

Grateful for the opportunity to work with young leaders like Spes Aurum 🌱

Because real change begins with awareness and grows with commitment.

This year, we started our cats TNVRM pilot project, thanks to the request and support from MP of Petaling Jaya, YB

Project IBA is based in a low-income community that reached out for help with their stray animal issues, asking for a more sustainable and humane approach that can create long-term positive impact for both the animals and the residents.

As we carry out the work on the ground, one thing is very clear… not all “strays” come from nowhere. A big part of the issue actually starts from pet owners in the community.

Some are not aware, some can’t afford the cost, and some end up in situations where they feel they have no choice but to let their pets go. But at the same time, we also meet pet owners who want to do the right thing but they just don’t have the means to get their cats neutered, vaccinated, or properly cared for.

So alongside our TNVRM work to manage the community strays, we started a small extension of the project to support these owners.
With help from and , we’re able to offer neutering, vaccination, and parasite prevention at about 25% of the usual cost.

So far, we’ve helped 59 pet cats through this effort, and there will be more…

If we want to reduce the number of animals ending up on the streets, this is one of the most direct ways to do it.

🙌 Sponsor RM85 for one cat.

If you’re able to, would you consider sponsoring a cat today?

🗒️
After more than a year of trying, we finally had the opportunity to sit down with the Datuk Bandar of Petaling Jaya, together with MBPJ councillors and members of the animal welfare community.

For many of us, this was not just another meeting.

This has been a journey that started back in 2023 through continuous engagement, conversations, and efforts to build trust with the council.

From our first meeting with MBPJ’s health department in June 2023, to being given the opportunity to run a TNRM pilot project in Bandar Utama in December 2023, and continuing the work throughout 2024… this has always been a step-by-step process. 📈

Even after the pilot project, the work didn’t stop.
More communities started reaching out because they wanted a more humane and sustainable approach.

This recent meeting was a chance to bring all of that forward, for everyone to share openly what is really happening on the ground, and to explore how things can improve.

Some areas are starting to move, including awareness, feeding practices, licensing, and community engagement.

At the same time, we want to be transparent ‼️ many things are still under review, and not everything can be addressed at once.

We are also encouraged to see that conversations around more structured and humane approaches are beginning to take place.

The recent article in The Star also means a lot to us, because it helps bring wider awareness to the issue. (scan the QR Code to read the article!)

When more people understand, there is a better chance for acceptance, and for meaningful change to happen over time.

We also recognise that change within the system takes time.
There are many layers, priorities, and realities that we have to work within.

So for now, we continue:
📌 To engage
💪🏻 To improve
🤝 To collaborate

And to push for better solutions➡️ together with all stakeholders involved

Thank you to Dato’ Mohamad Zahri Samingon. Thank you especially to Pn. Nalina ( ), and all the councillors who are open to listening and engaging.

And to all feeders, NGOs, and community members, this has always been a collective effort.

We are not there yet.
But we are moving.

One step at a time. 🙌

Have you given your kitty their Advocate dose this month? 🐱✨

It’s easy to let the date slip by, but staying on top of their monthly preventive is the best gift you can give your furkid. Just one simple spot-on application of Advocate works hard to protect them from:

Fleas and larvae 🚫
Heartworm and intestinal worms 🪱
Nasty ear mites 👂

Whether they are indoor loungers or garden explorers, parasites can find their way in. A quick dose today means total peace of mind and a very happy, itch-free cat! 🛡️🐾

AKC x British International School KL 🌟 Pawsitive Lions Project

Co-existing Safely with Strays & Pets (Part 3)

Together with Team Pawsitive Lions (Thazkiyah, Estelle, Alisa, Kristen, Isabel & Kay), we continue this series by focusing on an important topic ➡️ how to avoid dog bites, whether from strays or owned pets.

Dog bites are often seen as “sudden” or “unpredictable”, but in reality, they are usually the final response after a series of ignored signals.

✨ Prevention starts with mindfulness:
• Be aware of your surroundings
• Stay calm and avoid sudden movements
• Respect a dog’s space especially if unfamiliar with each other
• Do not force interaction
• Recognise that every dog has its own comfort level

Avoiding bites is not about fearing dogs 📌 it’s about understanding and respecting them.

At the end of the day, we have the ability to think, assess, and choose how we respond.

Animals react based on instinct, but we have the responsibility to act with awareness.

When we choose to be mindful, we reduce fear, prevent conflict, and create safer spaces for both people and animals.

Let’s continue building a more responsible and compassionate society 🙌 because peaceful co-existence starts with us. 💛🐶

Some of these cats weren’t born on the streets…they were left behind.

This March alone, we TNVR’d these homeless cats and what stood out most wasn’t just the numbers, but how many of them are already ready to love. 💞

They come when called.
They lean in for pats.
They look at you like they once had a home… and still remember what it felt like.

These are not “strays” in the way people think.
They are abandoned souls, young, affectionate, and full of life… just waiting for someone to give them a second chance.

All of them are:
✨ Neutered
✨ Vaccinated
✨ Dewormed
✨ On parasites protection

All they need now… is a place to belong.

If you’ve ever thought about adopting, this might be your moment.

Because the love you give them won’t just change their life… it will change yours too.

📩 DM us if you’d like to adopt or know more
📣 Please share to help them find homes

With gratitude to:
❤️ for caring for them like their own
❤️ for sponsoring parasite protection with Advocate for Cats, helping keep them safe, healthy, and ready for their next chapter.

Freshly bathed, smelling good… and already giving his best puppy begging face because he knows food is coming next 😆🐾

Some things never change 💌 just a happy, simple moment with Polar tonight.

By the way… Polar is still available for adoption 💝🤞

Wishing everyone a week ahead that feels right for you…
whether it’s productive, peaceful, or just slow and easy 💟

🐾 AKC x British International School KL: Pawsitive Lion Project
Co-existing Safely with Strays & Pets (Part 2)

Continuing this important series with Team Pawsitive Lion (Thazkiyah, Estelle, Alisa, Kristen, Isabel & Kay), we now look at a common concern in our communities ➡️ pet-related injuries, and how they happen.

Bites and scratches don’t happen “out of nowhere.”
Most of the time, they are the result of misunderstood signals, fear, or situations where animals feel cornered, threatened, or overwhelmed.

🔺 Animals don’t think like humans and they shouldn’t have to adapt to us.
Instead, it’s up to us to understand them better.

Animals are constantly communicating through their body language but when we don’t recognise or respect those signals, situations can escalate.

When we learn to slow down, observe, and respect their boundaries, we reduce fear, build trust, and create safer interactions for everyone.

Safe co-existence is not about control 💟 it’s about awareness, empathy, and responsibility.

Let’s continue working towards a more compassionate and informed society. 💛
