The last panel of the day, with Datoโ Dr Sheikh Hussain Yee and Datoโ Haji Kamarudin Abdullah, moderated by Faisal Abd Latif.
The Sheikh gave the room a phrase for something reverts feel but rarely name. โwe know we are the micro minority.โ Not fully held by the community they came from, not always recognised by the one they joined.
Then he told us what he said to his own mother:
โmother, I am your son, I am a Chinese, born a Chinese, will die as a Chinese, but a Chinese Muslim.โ
โmake the difference between a race and a religion. I am not a Malay. Malay is a race. Islam is the religion.โ
Datoโ Kamarudin, forty years a Muslim, on the years right after he took shahadah: โwhat people didnโt do to me? They hit me. They abused me. But after long patience, some of them accepted Islam.โ
Forty years later, Datoโ Kamarudin was still standing there, asking us to make space for people living between two worlds. That is where healing begins.
